NOTE: This newsletter might be cut short by your email program. There is a link at the bottom of screen to view the full newsletter.

All of us, if we are really alive, are disturbed now in our emotions. We are faced by emotional problems that we do not know how to solve. They distract our minds, fill us with misgiving, and sometimes threaten to wreck our lives. That is the kind of experience to which we are committed. If anyone thinks they are peculiar to the difficulties of his own situation, let them… talk a little about them to other people. They will discover that theirs

is not a solitary unfortunate. We shall make no headway with these questions unless we begin to see them, and keep on seeing them, not as our private difficulties but as the growing pains of a new world of human experience. Our individual tensions are simply the new thing growing through us into the life of mankind. John Macmurray

We feel our way through life, then rationalize our actions, as if emotion were a shameful scar on the countenance of reason. Maria Popova

Lately, there have been some hard turns in the lives of family and friends. We listen, and often there are tears. Often an apology for the tears and often an apology for expressing their difficult emotions. When did we become that culture? When did we demand that emotions become a switch? Then we flip a switch and grief becomes joy, hopelessness becomes optimism and isolation is replaced with a sense of belonging. We work through these journeys of transformation all our lives. No fast switches. Hard emotions should not bring us to shame; they are part of our paths forward.

Women We Should Know

Vivian Bailey

American World War II veteran, civil servant, and volunteer. She was a fundraiser for education, health, and military service personnel. Vivian Bailey was the first US Army black female pilot and one of the first African American officers in the Women's Army Corps. She served as a commander of what was named the Women's Colored Detachment because the forces were segregated. I bow my head to those who could endure such injustice at home and still risk their lives for their country.
