The one who will come after me ...
Dear people of Ascension,
As a rule, I rarely ask others to read my sermons. But I'm making an exception here. If you're among those who value Ascension, and if you have thoughts or questions with regard to my resignation and/or what lies ahead, please DO read my sermon from this past Sunday. I sought to use both the ministry and witness of John the Baptist and the Baptism of Jesus as points of reflection on our own present moment at Ascension.
As important, I hope the sermon might mark a beginning of a more intentional phase of the conclusion of my ministry at Ascension and anticipation, at least, of an interim ministry ahead and the eventual search for and call and installation of a new Rector.
In Sunday's sermon, I mentioned meetings that have included wardens, clergy and staff. We are all in agreement about the priority of communications, and we agree that we should share and explain what we know as we know it and to the extent that it's appropriate to do so. With this priority in mind, several links are shared below. I hope they may serve as a useful starting point for some and a reminder to all.
As I see it, the Monday night conversations presently being led by Fr. Petite and Mother Murphy-Gill may also be of value with regard to language and may serve as good warm-up conversations for others that will take place down the road in conjunction a rector search. However and whenever you do so, please join the larger conversation that will lead to a positive and faithful future for Ascension.

Here is a link to a Glossary of Terms, prepared by Mother Murphy-Gill, that introduces terms related to the governance of the Episcopal Church and the governance of parishes and related roles and titles.

Annual Meeting Time and Venue(s) now in Question - Help Requested
- As described last week, the wardens and I have begun to imagine a need, due to Omicron, to reconsider our annual meeting plans. We feel that two all-Zoom-remote options should be considered alongside the originally announced plan. Hence:
- One mass at 10:00 a.m. followed by Annual Meeting 'in-person' in St. Michael's Hall beginning at Noon with Zoom-enabled viewing and participation.
- Regular 9am & 11am masses - Zoom-only Annual Meeting starting at 2 pm.
-
Regular 9am & 11am masses - Zoom-only Annual Meeting starting at 4 pm.
Look for more annual meeting preparation information in coming weeks.

Baptized Members, Voting Members, Parish Directory
Annually in January, we sort out, update and correct parishioner information. We partly do so to identify those who qualify as Voting Members for the Annual Meeting. We also typically publish a new 'members and friends of Ascension' directory for the Annual Meeting (and also available afterward by way of inquiry to the parish office).
Please help!
We hope to have a draft annual meeting Voting Member List prepared and available for review on Sunday, January 16. Please check the list if you believe you should be on it. You may also call Br. Nathanael in the parish office tomorrow (1/13) or Monday (1/17): (312) 664-1271.
A parish directory is only as good as the reliable and current information shared by parishioners and others who are friendly affiliates of the parish. Please send your current information by email or call Br. Nathanael in the parish office Monday-Thursday, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Join the Conversation:
Anglican and Episcopal? Anglo-Catholic?
This past Monday, in our series on Anglo-Catholic identity, Fr. Petite led us in an engaging conversation on what it means to follow “the Anglican Way.” Thank you to all who joined and participated.
This coming Monday, January 17, we’ll continue our series and begin to look at what makes us an Episcopal church, exploring the history of how Anglicanism came to the United States and how we live into that identity today.
Our conversation takes place again via Zoom at 7:30 pm. All are welcome, even if you weren’t able to attend this week’s discussion.
Need a reminder about this series? Read on ...
Have you ever wondered what makes Ascension Anglo-Catholic? Or why we call ourselves an Anglican-Episcopal church? Beginning Monday, January 10, Fr. Bob Petite and Mtr Murphy-Gill will host a series of conversations about Anglican identity. We’ll explore our roots in the Church of England from the time of the Reformation, the establishment of the Episcopal Church in the United States, the influence of the Oxford Movement from across the pond, and the growth of Anglo-Catholicism in America. We’ll discern together how this history has shaped our particular Anglican-Episcopal corner of Christianity, its liturgical, theological, and spiritual expressions, and how we can live more deeply into this identity today.
Please join us via Zoom on Monday nights at 7:30 pm starting January 10.
We'll end at about 8:30 p.m. Should COVID numbers decline, we’ll consider in-person conversations. Feel free to contact me or Fr. Petite with your questions.
