If you don't yet have a physical Wallkill Public Library card you can apply for one online here or drop by the library to request one in person.

RCLS and Member Libraries Upgrade ILS

RCLS and the 47 member libraries it serves are excited to announce an upgrade to our integrated library system (ILS) scheduled for August 1-4, 2024. Our ILS is a comprehensive software suite that integrates various library functions. It serves as a digital card catalog and checkout system, managing day-to-day operations such as cataloging books and handling checkouts. The upgraded system will better serve users through new features and services, such as improved accessibility for all types of materials including digital resources.

Transition to Koha

RCLS will transition our ILS to Koha, the world’s first free and open-source library system. Developed with the support of libraries, volunteers, and support companies worldwide, Koha is a fully featured and scalable library management system. RCLS has partnered with ByWater Solutions, which will provide implementation, hosting, support, consultation, and development services.

What This Means for You

  • Your library card number/barcode will remain the same.
  • Your PIN will remain unchanged.
  • Your account information will remain unchanged.

During the Upgrade Period

  • Continue to access online resources such as Libby, Kanopy, and more.
  • Certain online library services, including but not limited to searching for materials, placing holds, and checking your account, will be temporarily unavailable.

Library Hours and Operations During Upgrade

During the upgrade, each library is adjusting its hours of operation differently, and some may be closed. Please check with the library to confirm their hours before visiting from August 1 to August 4, 2024. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your understanding and patience as we work to improve our system. More information and schedule changes will be shared as we get closer to the update.

Saturday Morning Book Club's July pick

The Saturday Morning Book Club will have their next meeting at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, June 29. They'll be discussing Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt. The group will be meeting in the reading room.

If you've finished the June selection, get a jump on July's book club choice. They will be discussing Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus on Saturday, July 27 at 10:30 a.m.

Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

But like science, life is unpredictable. Which is why a few years later Elizabeth Zott finds herself not only a single mother, but the reluctant star of America’s most beloved cooking show Supper at Six. Elizabeth’s unusual approach to cooking (“combine one tablespoon acetic acid with a pinch of sodium chloride”) proves revolutionary. But as her following grows, not everyone is happy. Because as it turns out, Elizabeth Zott isn’t just teaching women to cook. She’s daring them to change the status quo.

Laugh-out-loud funny, shrewdly observant, and studded with a dazzling cast of supporting characters, Lessons in Chemistry is as original and vibrant as its protagonist.

Adult Fiction Book Club's June selection

On Wednesday, June 19, at 6:30 p.m., the adult fiction book club will meet in our reading room to discuss the classic World War I novel, A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway.

A Farewell to Arms is the unforgettable story of an American ambulance driver on the Italian front and his passion for a beautiful English nurse. Set against the looming horrors of the battlefield - the weary, demoralized men marching in the rain during the German attack on Caporetto; the profound struggle between loyalty and desertion—this gripping, semi-autobiographical work captures the harsh realities of war and the pain of lovers caught in its inexorable sweep. Ernest Hemingway famously said that he rewrote his ending to A Farewell to Arms thirty-nine times to get the words right. – Goodreads
