ACT For Alexandria's Spring2Action 2024

On April 24, ACT for Alexandria will hold Spring2Action, an annual, online giving campaign activating the Alexandria community and amplifying the mission of local nonprofits across the city.

You have the opportunity to learn more about Community Lodgings and be part of a caring community that gives hope to hardworking, low-income families. Together, we can provide necessary resources and critical support to families and children working toward self-sufficiency and living independently.

It is important to note that 98% of Community Lodgings' families are working - in many cases more than 1 job - and because of escalating prices for housing food, utilities, healthcare, and other costs associated with living in the region, it is challenging to make ends meet.

Children in our Youth Education Program are in 1st-12th grades, enrolled in Alexandria City Public Schools, and participate in out-of-school time activities such as mentoring, tutoring, field trips, Power Hour, Peace Club, Spitfire Book Club, and other activities that consist of more than 530 hours of support annually shared by our staff, ACPS Teachers, Support Aides, and Volunteers.

Youth Education Program

Did you know? Community Lodgings' Youth Education Program serves up to 125 students who are enrolled in Alexandria City Public Schools (elementary and secondary).

Our Program is a FREE out-of-school time program that operates Monday through Friday during the school year.

Did you also know? We offer a six-week summer camp where students are guided around Alexandria and the region on field trips and high school students take advantage of college tours. Our students also participate in a financial literacy workshop, collaborate on skill-building activities, and receive mentoring support by dedicated volunteers.

Can you guess how many hours of additional academic, and social and emotional skill-building support students receive annually?

Walter’s Success Story

Meet Walter, who is a student in the 9th grade at Minnie Howard Campus of Alexandria City High School and he participates in our out-of-school time programming at Fifer Learning Center. His favorite subject is English.

Walter recently received the Community Award at Alexandria City High School.

In addition to Walter's parents and family, Community Lodgings' staff are proud of him for getting good grades and being helpful to his teachers and classmates and practicing good citizenship at school and in the community.

When asked how he achieved the award, Walter replied, "By being good in the quarter and doing all my work. A lot of times I would help kids with homework, and with translation, like when I’m in English class."

Walter defines community as helping people. He expressed, "It feels good, because I always love helping people when they need it." When asked about the future, Walter said, "I don’t know yet, but I want to continue what I’m doing now."

Walter continues to receive the inspiration and encouragement, as well as the mentoring and tutoring support he needs to excel in school and life. We're cheering you on! Way to go, Walter!
