Spring/Summer 2024

The Leona Group was abuzz with excitement on April 19, 2024 as it hosted its first annual STEAM Extravaganza, a vibrant exhibit of student innovation and community engagement. The event highlighted 41 student projects spanning kindergarten to 12th grades, demonstrating our schools’ commitment to fostering a strong foundation in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM). The diverse range of projects showcased the creativity and ingenuity of students from 14 schools. Visitors and fellow presenters saw competition robots in action, flew drones, witnessed coding and programming skills, learned how fruit can be a conductor, solved a crime scene investigation, viewed classroom reproductions and roller coasters to scale, as well as witnessing many science experiments and art displays. Most inspiring was the students’ interaction with their projects and discussions about their ideas with such passion.

A huge thank you goes to our community partners who provided our students with invaluable connections to industry’s use of STEAM components to guide and inspire them in their future careers. Michigan State Police, Lift, GMs Latino Network and Demo Days presented on how STEAM skills are transferable to employment opportunities. These sponsors, alongside University of Detroit Mercy, Southwest STEM Labs, Ecotek, zSpace, also shared experiential activities with the students and visitors in our vendor demonstrations. The presence of these community partners underscored the importance of collaboration between education and industry in preparing students for the challenges of the future workforce.

Our admiration goes to the schools, community partners, and students for bridging education and real-world applications on this day. And we are very excited to plan for next year’s STEAM Extravaganza on April 11, 2025.

Teacher Hall of Fame

On Wednesday, May 15th, 2024, school leaders and corporate staff gathered to honor 20 teachers inducted into The Leona Group Teacher Hall of Fame. School leaders, assistant leaders and instructional coaches are asked to submit nominations monthly. These nominations are based on observations by the school leadership team of their classroom and throughout their school. The leadership team then selects the teacher to honor that they feel embodies the spirit of their school's mission and they are featured in a company-wide newsletter each month. Congratulations to the class of 2023-2024 Teacher Hall of Fame inductees! Thank you for everything you do to improve life chances for all our students.

Charter Day at the Capitol

Charter Day at the Capitol (CDAC) was hosted by Michigan Association of Public School Academies (MAPSA) on May 15, 2024 during Charter Schools Week. This event brings together various charter school leaders, educators, students, parents, board members, and advocates to stand up and celebrate why we love our charter schools. Providing a direct connection to the decision-makers in our state, CDAC gives us the platform to showcase why we are passionate about the charter school movement.

César Chávez Academy Middle School (CCAM) was featured as a showcase school and showed off their students' achievements, including the robotics team and their robot "Lunch". The violin group also performed several beautiful pieces on the Capitol steps for a packed audience on the lawn. Click here to watch one of their pieces.

Saginaw Preparatory Academy (SPA) and Hope of Detroit Academy (HoDA) enjoyed this opportunity to visit the Capitol to showcase their pride for their school and support the charter school movement.

This day showed everyone why it is so important to have charter schools as an option for quality education in our various communities.
