From the Flight Deck

Dear Mark,

Our first week of school went very smoothly. Both teachers and students embraced the inclement weather, schedule changes, long lines to check out laptops, and a new door policy with grace and resilience. We love to see the students supporting each other and having a positive attitude about learning. It’s exciting to see our students back again engaging actively in their education.

Looking ahead, we are excited about the incredible instruction and opportunities that await our students. Our dedicated teachers have planned a curriculum designed to ignite curiosity and foster a love for learning through hands-on projects and collaborative activities. We are grateful for your support and involvement, which play a crucial role in our students’ success. Together, we are creating a nurturing environment where every child can thrive.

Warm regards,

Jason Jiménez

The new policy allows for parents to get a call notifying them of their child’s absence in the beginning of the day as well as the end of the day.

OCPS said each parent will know whether or not their child was in school at the beginning of the day.

High school calls will begin at 8:55 a.m., elementary school calls will begin at 10:05 a.m. and middle school calls will begin at 11:05 a.m.

The district said if your child is absent for more than half of the day, you will also receive a call in the afternoon.

Campus Safety

The Free 'FortyFL' app for your phone

FortifyFL is a mobile app that allows anyone to anonymously report suspicious activity to school officials and law enforcement agencies. The app was developed after the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act was passed in 2018, with input from students at the school. Thank you for installing this app today. Please remind your child that if they should ever see or hear of something suspicious or unusual this school year, please say something to any Legacy teacher or staff member right away.

Thank you for your cooperation and support.

Device and Accessory Fines

Parents, please take a moment and review student fines on our websiteWe are starting the school year off with a deficit of 184 chargers. If your child has an unpaid charger fine from last school year, you will need to reconcile their charger fine. We appreciate your support and cooperation.

OCPS Fee Structure here

Device Fine Procedure

(New changes)

The fine structure and processes for damaged student devices have changed this year. They are based on the student code of conduct and will result in a referral now, so we would like to provide relevant information from the code of student conduct below.

We would like to avoid damaged devices and consequences for students. To protect your children from negative consequences, please make sure they understand the importance of being careful with their devices. It is especially important for students to follow device management rules such as keeping their device in their backpacks while moving through hallways, setting backpacks down rather than throwing them, keeping liquids away from their devices, and avoiding rough play or sports while wearing their backpacks. Those are all examples of times that a damaged device would be considered willful damage and result in a referral.

District-issued devices are the property of the School Board of Orange County and its taxpayers. The OCPS Code of Student Conduct states that students must not willfully or maliciously damage Board property. Such damage resulting in less than $100 of repair/replacement costs will be considered a level II offense with consequences of parent communication, verbal counseling, and a fine. Willful or malicious device damage resulting in greater than $100 of repair/replacement costs is a level III offense with the same consequences. If a student should have three or more willful or malicious damage referrals, other disciplinary consequences may be considered in addition to those listed above. Exact wording can be found by clicking fee structure on the digital learning information page.

Device fees will be assessed based on the four-year depreciation schedule. Accessory fees will be assessed according to the schedule. Cases and chargers are examples of accessories assessed according to this schedule.

Every student at LMS enrolled in at least one core course will be assigned a device unless the parents/guardians opt out of device usage or the student brings their own device to school. Information about bringing your own device can be found at byod.ocps.net.

Foul weather and the '30-30 Rule'

The 30-30 Rule

For our families new to Legacy, at dismissal and no sooner, please note during times of inclement weather we follow the nationally recognized '30/30 Rule'. If thunder is heard within 30 seconds of a lightning strike or within an 8-mile radius of our campus, students will not be dismissed until 30 minutes have passed from the last sound of thunder. Parents and guardians may sign their child out during these situations at the main school office.

In 2023, Florida led all US states for lightning fatalities. Click here to see the fatality counts by state and the outdoor locations of these lightning strikes.

Legacy Library & Media Center

Library orientation lessons begin August 26th.

Starting the week of August 26th, ELA classes will be going to the library for orientation lessons and to check out books. After the library orientation lessons are completed, students will have the opportunity to visit the library before school to check out books, read, study, or choose some of the other activities like coloring, games, and puzzles. Throughout the year, teachers will sign up to bring their whole class to check out books and students will have the opportunity to earn the privilege to go to the library during lunch when they have finished eating.

Ms. Haynes is our new Library Media Specialist!

Media Center Policies

  • Students may check out up to three (3) books at a time.
  • Books may be kept for two (2) weeks with the option to renew.
  • Students are responsible for damage or lost books.

Sunshine State Young Readers Award Books / Legacy Battle of the Books Club for 2024-2025

Legacy Middle SAC & PTSA

Legacy Middle School is seeking the support of families and the community to join our Student Advisory Committee (SAC) and Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) in its mission of helping students collaborate, innovate, and accelerate our students to success.

Our first SAC meeting of the year will take place on Tuesday, September 10 at 5:30pm in the media center. We will review important information regarding SAC, the school, and a motion for funding. When parents are actively involved, it fosters a sense of community and collaboration among families, teachers, and administrators. This can create a more supportive and engaging environment for students. Being part of the SAC/PTSA helps parents stay informed about school events, policies, and needs. It also provides a platform for parents to voice their concerns and ideas directly to the school administration.

The current PTSA officers will help guide you through the process, provide all materials, and send out the officer application.

Members of the nominating committee can run for office but are not required to.

If you would like to serve on the Legacy Middle School PTSA Nominating Committee please complete the following form LMS Nomination Form or email us at legacymiddleschoolptsa@gmail.com.

Thank you,

Legacy Middle School PTSA

Attention Bus Riders

To register your child for the school bus, please log into Skyward and complete the School Bus Rider Registration form available in the Skyward forms module. Parents, please ensure that your child’s Skyward information is up to date and accurate.

SCHOOL BUS RIDER ID CARD- To enhance the safety of our student bus riders, Transportation Services will be issuing bus rider ID cards that have an RFID chip so that students will use their card to tap on and off the bus at their assigned bus stop and upon arrival or departure from their school.

Previously, the District encouraged parents to transport non-eligible bus riders to free up seats for students who require bus transportation. By identifying students who will ride the bus, Transportation Services can create more efficient routes instead of routing for all eligible riders.

The School Bus Rider Registration form is accessible to parents, schools, and Student Enrollment staff via the Skyward portal. If you encounter any issues accessing Skyward for your student, please email Legacy_MS@ocps.net with detailed information about the problem.

OCPS Transportation information can be found at https://www.ocps.net/departments/transportation_services if you have any further questions about buses.

Food Drop-Off Policy

Dear Legacy Middle School Families,

We want to inform you about an important update regarding our food drop-off policy for the upcoming school year. To ensure the safety and well-being of all our students, Legacy Middle School will not be accepting food drop-offs from families.

Rationale:

1. Food Safety and Allergies: We cannot authenticate the contents of food or if any food contains allergens that may pose risks to our students.

2. Focus on Instruction: Managing food deliveries can disrupt the learning environment and diminish students’ focus on instruction.

3. Consistency and Convenience: We ask that all students bring their own food if cafeteria options are not suitable. This ensures a consistent and safe meal experience for everyone.

Thank you for your understanding and support in helping us maintain a safe and focused learning environment.
