GHCF SCHOLARSHIPS 20TH ANNIVERSARY
GHCF celebrated 20 years of scholarships on Tuesday, May 8 th with a celebratory luncheon at River Oaks Country Club. Diane Higginbotham, Scholarships Manager, shared that over the course of 20 years, GHCF donors awarded $12.2 million dollars in scholarships!  The luncheon also included a panel of some scholarship donors: Page Varner - daughter of Jim and Katie Buller who established our first scholarship fund, the John Buller Scholarship; Roxann Neumann with Silver Eagle Distributors; and Ric Campo with Camden Property Trust.

It was a wonderful celebration capped by the announcement of our GHCF Community Impact Scholarship. This new scholarship, established by GHCF, was for a graduating high school senior within Harris County who was directly impacted by Hurricane Harvey. This scholarship, announced by GHCF Board Member Randa Weiner, was presented to Victoria Keo. Victoria will begin her post-secondary studies at the University of Houston this fall. We're excited for the next 20 years of scholarships!

ANTI-HUMAN TRAFFICKING FALL MEETING
Please join us on Tuesday, September 18th to discuss the launch of a new Houston Survivor Leadership Network. Recent gap analysis of the field shows that there is not an existing, formal network in place for Survivor leadership, support, and mentoring. This is a concept the group has long considered and feels the current time is right.  Join us as we formulate how to move this vision into reality, and concurrently open a community supported fund to provide emergency micro-grants to survivors in need, as they break out of  The Life  and reaffirm their dreams and independence.

If you want to learn more, join our group, or join us on summer site visits, please contact Rebecca Hove at rhove@ghcf.org or 713-333-2245.
MENTAL & BEHAVIORAL HEALTH LEARNING SERIES
As part of our commitment to provide educational opportunities to donors, GHCF hosted a four-part Lunch and Learn Series focusing on Mental & Behavioral Health and Adolescent Recovery. This PDF contains summary notes and links to speaker bios and presentations. Click the blue hyperlinks within the document to access information from each session. We anticipate reconvening the donors who have expressed an interest in this topic. If you want to be added to the list of donors, please contact Eileen Alexander at ealexander@ghcf.org or 713-333-2237.

HOUSTON20
A Grassroots Organization Sprouting Up!
GHCF is proud to partner with Houston20, an inspiring organization making a stand to fight human sex trafficking. GHCF provides back office administration support, which currently includes daily operations for grantmaking, expense processing, and record keeping. With GHCF providing these services, Houston20 has more time and funds available to focus on its mission.

Houston20 is a growing group of influential and committed Houstonians who formed a movement to advocate for the end of sex trafficking and sex trade in our city. This grassroots organization, formed officially in January 2018, already awarded its first grant to Hope Rising, an organization that provides specialized foster care for children rescued from human sex trafficking. Houston20 also made it possible for members of the Houston law enforcement community to attend conferences that provide training to combat this unspeakable crime.

On the advocacy front, Houston20 sent trafficking survivors to Washington, DC to visit with Representatives about the set of bills known as FOSTA-SESTA, which are intended to curb sex trafficking online. The House bill, Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act (FOSTA) and the Senate bill, known as Stop Enabling Sex Traffickers Act (SESTA) were successfully passed and the President signed them into law on April 11, 2018. This controversial bill package has already impacted sites like Reddit, Craigslist, and Google - and that is just the start. It is amazing what like-minded individuals can accomplish when they pool their resources.
