Learning Module 5:
How to Recruit an Amazing Job Developer
Editorial by Christian Saint Cyr

Job developers aren’t like everyone else. While other professionals in career development discuss how clients should market themselves theoretically, job developers need to market their clients in practice. Everyday, job developers are out there testing our theories on what employers expect, what resumes should look like and how to excel in job search.
.
This learning module recognizes job developers have a unique set of skills and attributes. We will discuss how career development organizations can identify these skills and attributes, recruit for them and recognize them in developing their staff.
.
There are more than 40,000 jobs in the Canadian National Occupation Classification (NOC) code but only 516 unit groups, which means we are typically grouping together multiple occupations under one NOC Code.
.
For instance, we’re familiar with NOC Code 41321 which goes under the title ‘Career development practitioners and career counsellors (except education)’. While this is often referred to as a single job, it actually encompasses multiple jobs such as employment counsellors, case managers, job coaches, resource room advisors, facilitators and job developers.
.
It’s important to remember that someone who excels as a case manager might not make a very good job developer and someone who is a good job developer might not be a very good resource room advisor. I’ve met a number of resource room advisors who wouldn’t want to work as a facilitator or job coach. Nevertheless, if we log into the Canada Job Bank and search for jobs under NOC Code 41321, it’s going to provide us all of these jobs and more.
.
Obviously, the common bond for career development practitioners is an understanding of career development and strategies for supporting individuals toward career success. This understanding and these strategies are applied based on the role a person is working in.
.
Hiring career development professionals requires a deeper analysis of what makes someone a great facilitator while another individual could be a great case manager.
.
Given the relationship job developers have with employers and their clients, an amazing job developer will be much more oriented toward developing community connections, marketing clients based on their strengths and reaching out to new individuals where a previous relationship may not exist.
