Hear, hear! A Big Cheer… for Head Start Staff this Year!

We greatly appreciate our Head Start teams! A well-earned summer break for Head Start students begins May 22. This has been an amazing year of development for such young, precious minds. We could not do it without the energy, enthusiasm, dedication and nurturing hearts of our teachers, teaching assistants, bus and van drivers and all the staff who provide our children such a rewarding experience in early learning.

Our Teachers are “Heart” at Work

St. Simons Island, Ga. – Just after arrival, eight teachers with Macon-Bibb County EOC gathered for a photo before they began a comprehensive, three-day schedule of training and instruction at the 2024 GHSA conference.

Head Start teachers from around the state gathered at Epworth by the Sea on St. Simons Island, Ga., to attend the Georgia Annual Spring Training Conference (May 8-10). Head Start, Early Head Start and early childhood education teachers attended training sessions that covered topics such as educational instruction methods, family and father/male involvement, health and nutrition, mental health, staff wellness, and many other topics to prepare them for the new school year beginning in August.

Commemorating the 60th Anniversary of Community Action

The month of May marks the 60th anniversary of Community Action across the nation. In 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Economic Opportunity Act into law, creating the most significant federal programs aimed at reducing poverty. The Macon-Bibb Economic Opportunity Council, Inc. (MBEOC) is a part of this national network focused on impactful services to help those in need, to revitalize low-income communities, and to empower families to become self-sufficient in Bibb and Monroe counties.

Ways MBEOC is Driving Change in Your Community

  • Approximately 783 students were enrolled in MBEOC's Early Head Start and Head Start programs during 2023-2024 at no cost to families.
  • More than 20,000 families each year are provided resources, such as emergency assistance, housing support, employment guidance, energy cost offset, and transportation service.
  • Thirty-one volunteers with our Foster Grandparent program provided more than 42,183 hours of service this past year through mentoring, reading and supporting our young children, teens and adults.
  • Aided by the federally funded “LIHEAP” energy assistance program, we are in the active process of assisting approximately 10,000 families surmount higher utility costs with summer heat.
