Leadership Surge offers comprehensive leadership development programs and training to help your organization address your leadership gap and prepare your team for the future. Led by Alex Willis, Leadership Surge delivers high-energy, highly effective services and programs that positively impact organizational culture.

Course Description for Second Session

Every individual has a unique spectrum of personality traits that impact the way he or she communicates. During the Right-Thinking® workshop, participants are introduced to The Four Lenses®.

This personality assessment helps everyone identify and understand their own temperament (i.e., Green, Gold, Blue, Orange). Groups then learn how to communicate with each other through a process of empathic listening. Rather than judge others for flawed behaviors, participants learn how to value diversity and appreciate unique perspectives. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of themselves and a greater social awareness and acceptance of others.

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
  • understand people better
  • learn to communicate with power and purpose
  • reduce stress and conflict in relationships
  • use practical techniques to increase their leadership influence
Collaboration, Education, and Opportunity Behind Partnership Between NECA and ECAO
*Picture taken in 2019
ECAO and NECA have announced that on January 1 ECAO officially joined NECA as their 119th Chapter. Executive Director Graeme Aitken joined NECA CEO David Long on LinkedIn Live to announce the partnership.

Given the similarities between the two organizations, ECAO is looking to create more opportunities for its electrical contractor members and this further collaboration will allow them to facilitate that. As well as drawing on the educational opportunities that NECA can offer.

“What we’re looking for is integration, professionalism, but most importantly to expand our community."

Black History Month

February marks Black History Month. Let's celebrate the many achievements and contributions of Black Canadians who, throughout history, have done so much to make Canada the culturally diverse, compassionate and prosperous nation it is today.
Anti- Racism Toolbox Talk

Racist actions, activities, tones, or remarks have no place in Ontario workplaces including construction sites!

Not only does the ECAO have a zero-tolerance for any form of racism or intimidation; we are taking our responsibility to stand up and be actively anti-racist in policy and action.

To assist and educate our member companies and their employees on what racism is, how to recognize it on construction sites, and how to eliminate it for the good of all; we have developed the toolbox talks and accompanying poster.

Please take the time to have the discussion clearly communicating that racism is unacceptable in your company and on your worksite and get a commitment from workers to “See it, Say it, Stop it”.

Please print and post the poster to reinforce our message to all workers, contractors, and visitors: racism of any kind will not be tolerated.

Happy Lunar New Year!
Wishing you, your families and all who celebrate, a year full of wisdom, courage and strength.

James Barry appointed to Board of Skilled Trades Ontario
Skilled Trades Ontario has released the names of those appointed to their Board. James Barry, Executive Secretary Treasurer of the IBEW Construction Council of Ontario has a seat.

"I am very honored to be appointed to the Board of Directors of the newly established Skilled Trades Ontario, a Crown agency established by the Ontario government to help oversee the training and promotion of skilled trades.

I look forward to working with the Ontario government and the other Directors of the Board to help ensure we have a robust system that leads the way in training and safety for our skilled workers." - James Barry, Executive Secretary Treasurer, IBEW Construction Council of Ontario

Skilled Trades Ontario officially launches; Melissa Young at the helm
As we reported back in May 2021—and now come to fruition—the Ontario government has officially launched Skilled Trades Ontario.

The new Crown agency aims to improve trades training and simplify services. It will “promote and market the trades, develop the latest training and curriculum standards, and provide a streamlined user-friendly experience for tradespeople”.

“We’re redrawing the system to address Ontario’s labour shortage and make the trades a career of choice for more people,” said Monte McNaughton, Minister of Labour, Training and Skills Development. “By creating this new agency, we are working for workers and delivering the generational change that labour leaders and employers have been calling for.”

“I commend this government for bringing generational change that will remove the stigma surrounding the trades, cut down on red tape, and ensure all young people know these jobs offer a clear path to a better life,” said the agency’s new CEO and Registrar, Melissa Young.

Prior to this appointment, Young served as executive director of NETCO (National Electrical Trade Council), which is jointly sponsored by IBEW Canada and the Canadian Electrical Contractors Association (CECA) to address workforce development for Red Seal electrical trades.

Young also served on the province’s 5-member Skilled Trades Panel to provide advice and recommendations to Minister McNaughton on developing “a new approach to training and certification”.

Technical Q&A with ESA Technical Advisor Malcom Brown
This technical Q&A was done as part of ESA’s annual License Holder Meeting on November 18th. A recording of the entire meeting is available online. The technical Q&A began with a general overview of ESA’s top 5 changes provided to the 2021 Canadian Electrical Code by Malcom Brown. Following that, Brown goes through a number of questions submitted by LECs (Licenced Electrical Contractors), covering several topics, including EV energy management systems, GCFI and AFCI protection, nuisance tripping for washing machines and microwaves, smoke alarm requirements, and common inspection defects.

CCDA Releases New Tool to Support Success on Red Seal Exams
The Red Seal website now has another tool to help exam candidates to better prepare to write the Red Seal exam. Each trade has its own self-assessment guide, available on each trade’s Red Seal Exam Breakdown page.

The guide is designed to help candidates evaluate their own knowledge and experience in the trade and readiness for the exam. Candidates can then use the results to identify the areas of the trade where additional preparation, or more experience may be required.

This new guide will work hand-in-hand with the new Red Seal Exam Preparation Guide and a series of Red Seal Exam Breakdowns that were previously announced by Red Seal.
