Tlingit & Haida Mendenhall River Flood Response

In light of Tlingit & Haida’s ongoing efforts with Mendenhall River flood response in Juneau, Alaska, the Tribal Emergency Operations Center (TEOC) is operating under a three-phase approach to cleanup.

Understanding these phases is essential for effective management and coordination during an emergency.

Phase 1: Debris Removal & Dewatering

Cleanup crews removed large debris and used pumps to get water out of crawl spaces and basements to prevent houses from further damage and deterioration.

Phase 2: Drywall & Insulation Demolition

Teams then removed wet insulation and damaged drywall to allow the internal structure of the walls to air out and prevent mold from growing

Phase 3: Sanitization Kits

Crews will distribute sanitization kits that include Simple Green, Clorox bleach, masks and gloves to help residents continue cleanup once the demolition is complete.

The TEOC is expected to enter Phase 3 this afternoon, Tuesday, August 13, 2024 and will continue until all of the sanitation kits have been distributed.

"Phase three being the last step in our response enables us to assure we’ve addressed all the life, health and safety issues," said Incident Commander Sabrina Grubitz. "We know we’ve addressed the immediate needs of our citizens and from there we will be able to help our citizens who’ve been highly affected to get connected with other resources within the community to start doing the rebuild of their homes with the assistance of these services that are brought into the community in different locations, by different entities."
