Santa Cruz Valley Citizens Council Proclaims April 2-8, 2024 as International Dark Sky Week

On March 27, 2024, the Santa Cruz Valley Citizens Council proudly announced the proclamation of April 2-8, 2024, as International Dark Sky Week in Santa Cruz County, Arizona. This declaration underscores the importance of preserving our natural night skies and raising awareness about the adverse effects of light pollution on our environment and communities.

The proclamation, passed and adopted today by the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors, which include Manuel Ruiz, Bruce Bracker and Rudy Molera, emphasizes the intrinsic beauty and wonder of a natural night sky as a shared heritage of humankind. Mary Vanis, President of the Santa Cruz Valley Citizens Council, stresses the significance of protecting our dark sky resources, stating, "Preserving our dark sky in the Amado to Tubac to Tumacácori area is crucial not only for our enjoyment, but also for the well-being of our ecosystem. By reducing light pollution, we can safeguard the beauty and ecological balance of our region for generations to come."

International Dark Sky Week aims to educate the public about the harmful effects of light pollution and promote responsible outdoor lighting practices. As part of this week-long event, residents are encouraged to learn more about preserving the importance of our dark sky.

The proclamation acknowledges the economic and environmental consequences of light pollution, citing its detrimental impact on wildlife habitats and its waste of natural resources. It also highlights Arizona's significant role in hosting world-renowned observatories and the importance of protecting our dark sky for scientific research and tourism.

Residents of Santa Cruz County are urged to join the Santa Cruz Valley Citizens Council in observing International Dark Sky Week. Together, let us raise awareness and support for the protection of our precious dark sky resources.

Tumacácori National Historical Park

Tumacácori is a cultural crossroads in Arizona’s Santa Cruz River valley where O’odham, Yaqui and Apache people lived until European Jesuit and Franciscan missionaries, settlers, and soldiers arrived.

"The cultural and natural resources at Tumacácori National Historical Park tell an important story about local Native American communities and the intersection with Spanish exploration, as well as the human connection to the desert lands of southern Arizona,” says Mike Medrano, Superintendent.

Just down the street from Wisdom's, our national park is a wonder and hosts numerous special events throughout the year.

Entrance to the park costs $10 per adult, free for federal pass holders and children under 16. For more information, call 520-377-5060 or visit

www.nps.gov/tuma

For more information about park events and activities, call Tumacácori National Historical Park at 520-377-5060, or visit the park website, at nps.gov/tuma

I was asked to share with you that rat poison is killing animals that eat the rats that have ingested the poison. (Round Up is another killer of our pets and wildlife).

Please consider finding another way to handle your rat problem in order to protect your sweet pets and our beautiful wildlife. And many have successfully gardened organically for 25 years without ever using weed or insect killers by attracting birds (tall water fountain and never birdseed) and by planting native plants that attract natural predators. Pulling weeds after it rains is also most effective!

Here is a link to some non-poison ideas for rat problems:
