Leading in Turbulent Times
2020 is like “Building the plane, while in the air, in a tornado, and preparing it to be seaworthy” - Jorge Perez, CEO, YMCA

Well said, Jorge. That is most certainly what this year has felt like, so we got some insight from several nonprofit leaders on how they have led in these turbulent times. They shared successes, ongoing pain points, and advice for the future. Emerging themes and opportunities arose that will be a focus as we move into 2021:
  • EMPLOYEE CARE - Your employees are suffering, some with “Survivors Guilt” (yes, there’s a name for this), communicate frequently with them, ensure staff is taken care of - in benefits, professional development, and compensation. Enlist staff help to champion efforts to support each other.
  • Project Yoga, a Leadership Council member, is offering some pro bono “desk yoga” sessions for your team - January 6th from 8:30am-9:00am and January 20th from 11:30am-12:00pm. Click Here to Register
  • Venture Out/Camp Joy offers FREE 20 minute team building sessions - contact tiadraper@camp-joy.org
  • BOARD - communicate frequently, engage the board in WIN discussions - "What’s important now” (Thanks Roderick Hinton, Children’s Home!). Make decisions speedily, and allow grace & understanding.
  • FINANCIAL - be conservative, look for efficiencies, do scenario planning for 2021.
  • FUNDRAISING - things have changed, virtual fundraising has proven successful, capitalize on these opportunities.
  • TECHNOLOGY - use has accelerated, how else can we leverage these new tools to serve?

Balancing all of these efforts WHILE continuing to move forward on the DEI journey is important for all of our organizations to be successful in 2021 and beyond.

We welcome your suggestions for programming that meets your most pressing needs.

Thanks!

Jenny

The Health Collaborative
I’m the CEO of The Health Collaborative (THC), a Cincinnati non-profit bringing healthcare stakeholders together and providing them with the actionable data they need to help their patients. I’m also CEO of the Network for Regional Healthcare Improvement (https://nrhi.org) — a national organization based in Washington, DC, similarly supporting communities across the US on matters of health and healthcare improvement. Additionally, I serve as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biomedical Informatics at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Much of my work involves strategic planning and the pursuit of shared aims across the healthcare stakeholder continuum; working toward ambitious goals within the constraints of tight budgets; and inspiring change and improvement through shared decision-making. Read More
