Dear River Forest residents,

On Thursday, June 13, the Wounded Warrior Project Soldier Ride made its way through the Village. The Wounded Warrior Project offers veterans assistance with benefits, financial aid, peer support, and mental and physical care. The Soldier Ride aims to help warriors build confidence and strength within a supportive community. We extend our gratitude to both our Police and Fire departments for managing traffic and offering moral support to all the riders.

Please help the Village set priorities for eradicating lead pipes from our water supply network by taking a short survey. The Village is updating its lead service line inventory as required by the Lead Service Line Replacement and Notification Act. More information on this project can be found in an article below.

I encourage residents to attend the Village's upcoming Juneteenth Flag Raising Ceremony this Monday, June 17, in partnership with the River Forest Public Library and a coalition of local organizations. The event begins at 11 a.m. at the River Forest Public Library. The Juneteenth Traveling Museum and Afriware Books will also be available for participants throughout the event. I would like to remind residents the Village Board will discuss the Commercial Zoning Proposal at its next meeting this Monday, June 17, at 7 p.m. at Village Hall. You can view the entire timeline of the Commercial Zoning Proposal on the front page of the June monthly newsletter found here.

Lastly, I would like to wish all of our fathers a warm and wonderful Father's Day.

Sincerely,

Cathy Adduci, Village President

Lead Pipe Survey

The Village is working to identify all lead water service lines in River Forest and we need help from our community members! As part of a commitment to meet the requirements of the Illinois Lead Service Line Replacement and Notification Act, please take a short survey found here. Residents are asked to complete this survey so the Village can ultimately eradicate lead piping from our water supply network.

The Lead Service Line Replacement and Notification Act requires that annual lead service line inventory replacement plans be submitted every April for the next three years. The Village is finalizing year one replacement locations and preparing a bid package. Priority is given to high-risk locations and those where only the customer side needs replacement, minimizing street openings. Thank you in advance for your assistance with this important initiative!

HPC Awards

The Historic Preservation Commission is currently accepting applications for the 2024 Historic Preservation Awards from homeowners, architects, or contractors who have helped to maintain the historic character of the Village. For more information or to apply, click here. Nominations must be received on or before July 26 to be considered for one of this year’s awards.

National Safety Month

June is National Safety Month and a time to prioritize safety in our homes, workplaces, and communities. Whether at work, on the road, or at home, a little precaution can go a long way. This observance is a reminder to residents to be cognizant about preventing injuries and promoting safe practices. For free safety resources and to learn more about National Safety Month, click here.

Egg Drop Recap

The 7th graders at St. Vincent Ferrer Elementary School built containers to protect an egg from breaking when dropped from 30 feet - and the Village’s Public Works Department was there to help! For the first container, they could only use materials provided by their science teacher, Mrs. Arnston. For the second container, they could use any materials they wanted. Only three eggs survived the drops. This experiment taught the students about potential and kinetic energy, and they had a lot of "egg-ceptional" fun!

Please reference the map and plan accordingly when visiting the College. For additional information, click here.

2024 Summer Sounds Concert Series

Dominican University will again host a series of free concerts on the Quad this summer! These outdoor concerts, presented by the Dominican University Performing Arts Center, will feature live groups, duos and soloists on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. from June 12 to August 14. To learn more, or to view the full concert schedule, click here.

World Refill Day

Celebrate World Refill Day on Sunday, June 16, by bringing your own containers! Get 10 cents off your Starbucks drink with a reusable cup. Starbucks is an early adopter of this eco-friendly holiday that has been observed for the last 30 years. Use your containers for leftovers at restaurants, and shop bulk goods at Sugar Beet Cooperative for spices, grains, nuts, tea, coffee, and snacks. Make sure to stop by their café with your own drink bottle for coffee, tea, fresh juices and kombucha. You can also use your own container when purchasing items from the Whole Foods bulk aisle. Stop by the customer service desk to get your containers weighed first, so the cashier can remove the weight at checkout.
