Head of School’s Message

I want to take a moment to thank each of you for your hard work and dedication this week. Your participation in Thursday's professional development sessions was outstanding and it's clear that you're committed to "Progress, not Perfection" this year. As the photos below show, so many of you have created classrooms that are affirming and culturally relevant spaces where every student feels valued and empowered to learn, setting the stage for academic risk-taking and productive struggle through our Vision: Rigor through Collaboration. Your efforts are making a real difference in the lives of our students, and I’m grateful for all that you do.

Best Practices on Campus

Classroom Environment

All LHS classrooms should be inclusive, positive areas where students feel comfortable and celebrated–and ready to engage in the rigorous work of learning.

A recent school walkthrough showed that teachers have already grouped desks into collaborative learning spaces and have begun to transform the bare walls of your classrooms into visually-appealing spaces with affirming messages, student work, and community norms.

Here are some highlights from across the campus.

Wellness Dome

This week Mr. Gorham’s Period 1 ELA class visited the Wellness Dome and joined in a circle that affirmed students by inviting them to share about their cultural backgrounds and how they and their families may have experienced diaspora. Students demonstrated a high level of engagement as they explored how learning about themes from Julia Alvarez’s short story "Antojos," allows them to draw relevant connections between classroom content and their personal lives. To help you establish or sustain a positive, engaging class environment and strengthen teacher-student and student-student relationships, Schedule a class visit to our LHS wellness dome or access the QR code below. For any questions, please contact Mr. Gonell at egonell@lawrence.k12.ma.us.

MTSS at LHS

MTSS Overview

Our year-long focus on MTSS begins by answering the questions, "Who are our students?" "What do we know, not know, and need to know about them in order to best meet their needs and accelerate their learning?" This is at the heart of our Focus 40 collaborative data-inquiry work and requires both developing our understanding of students as individuals and refining how we think about students as learners through the use of standardized test data and our bi-weekly assessments.

We are excited to soon roll-out stations as a dynamic, flexible way to meet students' needs. In the meantime, continue to build relationships and challenge students to carry the cognitive lift through collaboration.

Welcome New MTSS Supervisor: Patricia Brady!

I’m excited to join LHS as the Humanities Pathway Supervisor. My journey in education has included urban schools in Chicago and Massachusetts, and I've worked in a variety of roles, including instructional coach, ESL teacher, content-area teacher, teacher educator, and director of an education outreach center. I’m passionate about supporting teachers and staff so they can help all students succeed. I look forward to getting to know all of you and working together to make a difference!

Lancer Pride

Successful PD

For their September 12 PD, the lower school launched "Educators as Writers: Do the WRITE thing!", led by the Teaching and Learning Alliance and supported by the LSA9-10 Admin Team. Teachers engaged in a writing workshop where they chose inspirational quotes and images to write for 2 minutes uninterrupted, in mini-quick write sessions. They also considered the various kinds of writing students do in their content areas, for what purposes and which audiences. If you are interested in joining a monthly PLC for continuing exploring writing and sharing best practices, please email nasrin.samadi@lawrence.k12.ma.us. We would like representation from all content areas!
