Historical Tidbit:
Christo's: The Tradition That Lasted
50 Years
|
Pictured above is what was known as the coveted Gold Room – one of the four color-coded dining rooms in the restaurant Christo's. Opening in 1964 with capacity for 120 people, Greek migrant Christos Tsaganis (later dubbed the Greek Salad King) over time expanded the restaurant to seat 450 people within four different color-coded rooms.
The restaurant became one of Brockton's most known landmarks on the East Side for a reigning 50 years located at 782 Crescent Street across from Massasoit Community College. A lavish, family run restaurant is home to 50 years of Brocktonians laughs and cries to this day – in both memory and history. Unfortunately, what could be seen as a never fading establishment and pride of the East Side came to its end on New Years Eve in 2013 after the passing of Tsaganis.
The building itself was bought by the state and torn down in 2014. However, with the doors of Christos closing... the doors of the Allied Health and Science Center for Massasoit College were opened! Beautiful ends come with beautiful beginnings. And if you thought Christo's was gone forever or never got to experience it, it is survived two miles down the road in Whitman located in Dolley's Plaza as Christo's to-go. It is now owned and operated by Tsaganis' daughter Gigi Johnson.

BROCKTON PUBLIC LIBRARY
“FINES FREE” POLICY
The Brockton Board of Library Trustees approved a new policy that eliminates overdue fees. The policy is effective immediately and is designed to encourage residents to utilize all of the resources of the library.
“The library is a central part of the community, and the last thing we want to do is restrict access to knowledge because of overdue charges; we are all rebounding from the pandemic, and we trust people to bring things back so that other people can borrow them,” said board chair Jocelyn Meek.
While overdue fines are now wiped clean, lost items must still be replaced at the borrower’s expense, said Head of Circulation Zoe Rath. Museum passes are also subject to overdue fines.
“Fines free is a trend among libraries across the country that recognizes the need for equitable access,” Rath said. “And it is also in line with the core tenets of public librarians: that we offer our services largely for free.”
Library Director Paul Engle said that the money generated by overdue fines was negligible; overdue fines generated less than 0.001 of city revenue in fiscal 2020.
The Brockton Public Library provides traditional library services like books, periodicals, movies, and games for borrowing, and also delivers core services including computer and ESL classes, research and genealogy assistance, and vibrant community programming. The children’s department serves more than 10,000 families per year with storytimes, summer reading, community crafts, and movies, in addition to the robust library offerings. The BPL also provides Brockton Public Schools students with assistance for science and history day projects, has a maker space program where students explore science and technology, a well-developed Teen Room, and many adult reading and crafting groups.
The main library and both branches have reopened to pre-pandemic hours and new programming is being developed for the fall, including author talks, musical performances, poetry, and art installations.
“A library is a place for people to gather, to explore new topics, develop new skills, and sample all that Brockton has to offer,” Engle said. “We want to be as welcoming as possible, and we hope our residents know that we are here and ready to help.” www.brocktonpubliclibrary.org
