DEPARTMENT OF BUILDING INSPECTION AND OTHER NEWS
Greetings,

Following is more exciting news from DBI.

The locations of disciplines at counters is still in flux with more changes last week however I think that by the end of August the final locations of disciplines at counters will be determined. Permitting process is definitely more efficient the traffic though seems to have dropped off.

There is still a backlog with all stations for in-house plan check and processing of issuance of in-house plan check permits by CPB is taking over one week.

On the whole I think that DBI is certainly taking the lead in the bay area, particularly for OTC permit issuance.

I applaud and commend the leadership and everyone in all the divisions for making this possible.

Letter from DBI

A reminder that next week, DBI will reopen and again welcome customers to meet in-person at the SF Permit Center (49 South Van Ness) with permitting staff, plan checkers, records management staff and inspectors starting Monday, July 19.

What this means for you:

  • All DBI services offered before Covid will resume, but note that we will continue to accept applications for in-house review projects via our customer service email address—see our website for more information: https://sfdbi.org/inhousereview

  • Due to new guidance from the San Francisco Department of Public Health, fully vaccinated members of the public are recommended to wear a mask in the building. Unvaccinated customers are required to wear masks in the building.

  • Social distancing requirements and capacity limits will no longer be in effect.

  • Customers will be able to access the 4th & 5th floors during business hours to meet with staff and conduct rechecks as necessary; all visitors must first check in with security on the ground floor, and visitors must have an appointment before coming to the 5th floor.

For information on our in-person customer service hours, please visit the San Francisco Permit Center website.

Transitioning Back to Walk-in Service

As we restore our normal operations and return to the convenience of our walk-in service, the San Francisco Permit Center will no longer allow customers to schedule appointments for Over-the-Counter (OTC) with plans permit services. We will honor existing appointments through October 29, and permit applicants can continue to hold up to five existing appointments.

Because we are returning to a walk-in service, we are eliminating the same-day drop-in queues and the appointment waitlist.

To check on current wait times, please visit the SF Permit Center website.

New Date - Public Advisory Forum

DBI is rescheduling the July 28 Public Advisory Forum to 3:30-5 pm on August 25. We will share topics and call-in information prior to the meeting.

Thank you for your support and partnership during the challenges of the past year. We look forward to seeing you and working together.
