MAY 2024

From the Executive Director

The June calendar is full of opportunities to collaborate. You can find Mike Pol, Tricia Perez, and me at several meetings this summer, and we would love to connect with you. Check out the calendar below to learn not only where ROSA staff will be presenting but also other meetings you may be interested in following.

ROSA's Advisory Council will be holding its summer meeting on June 14. Even if you are not a member, we would love for you to attend. As you will see in our recap of the March meeting, our members share important information about ongoing and upcoming projects. If you would like to attend, register here.

I am also very excited about the launch of our Offshore Wind & Fisheries Funder's Coordination meeting. One of ROSA's strategic objectives is to coordinate research projects, monitoring programs, and the data collected through them. Read more about this exciting effort below. This group will be critical to meeting this goal and ensuring collaboration.

Advisory Council Update

Vineyard Wind 1 Lessons; Changes to Trawl Surveys Proposed

The ROSA Advisory Council convenes quarterly to receive and share information related to offshore wind research, monitoring, and current and future construction projects.

At the March meeting, the Vineyard Wind team shared lessons learned to date on the construction of Vineyard Wind 1, scientists discussed changes to bottom trawl surveys, and the Acoustic Telemetry Committee reported on its first meeting.

Why You Should Attend ROSA's Next Advisory Council Meeting on June 14

One of ROSA's core principles is transparency. We believe research and monitoring of the impacts of OSW development on fish and fisheries should be shared to promote science-based decision making and collaboration.

In this spirit, we encourage anyone interested in OSW and fisheries research to attend our Advisory Council meetings to learn how the fishing industry, OSW developers, state and federal agencies, and researchers are working together to better support the coexistence of offshore wind development and fishing.

ROSA Holds First Funder Coordination Meeting

ROSA recently held its first Offshore Wind and Fisheries Funder Coordination meeting. Led by ROSA Research Project Manager Tricia Perez, the meetings will promote coordination of research funding on the East Coast, track funded research, and identify additional research needs related to the impacts of offshore wind development on fish and fisheries. For the launch meeting, ROSA convened state, federal, and non-profit organizations, among others -- the major entities who release solicitations and fund OSW-related research.

"The launch of the Funder Coordination meetings is a big step toward our goal of understanding current and future research projects to identify where gaps remain," said Reneé Reilly, ROSA's Executive Director. "As a result, we can identify and avoid duplication of efforts while also supporting the production of the best available science."

The outcomes of this meeting will also support the new update of ROSA's FishFORWRD database on fish and fisheries projects and research needs related to offshore wind.

ROSA Summer Interns to Focus on Monitoring Framework/Guidelines

ROSA welcomes Nusrat Noor (top, right) and Delaney McBride (bottom, right) as its summer interns. Together, they will focus on advancing the socioeconomic and benthic habitat/essential fish habitat sections of ROSA's Offshore Wind Project Monitoring Framework and Guidelines. Specifically, they will work to understand methodologies, objectives, data types, and the life cycles of data of ongoing research within the offshore wind and fisheries field.
