Update on Avian Influenza in BC

On November 16, two commercial poultry farms in Abbotsford tested positive for HPAI. BC Infected Premise (IP) 30 is scheduled to be destroyed on November 18 and BC IP-31 will be scheduled after. We expect that the Huntington/Sumas border crossing will be in the Canadian Food Inspection Agency's Primary Control Zones (PCZ) for BC-IP30.

Thank you to all growers for your continued dilligence in practicing the highest level of biosecurity during this risky time.

Allocation for Period A-181

The allocation for Period A-181 ( February 12 to April 8, 2023 ) was set by the Chicken Farmers of Canada Board of Directors on November 16, 2022 at 1 % above base as follows (in KG LIVE weight.)

Market Development: 8,513,312

Specialty (BC, AB and ON): 2,265,155

MD as compared to domestic 2.95%

Specialty as compared to domestic: 0.79%

British Columbia

Domestic: 37,895,650

Market Development: 1,769,800

Specialty:1,366,267

Total: 41,031,717

MD as compared to domestic: 4.67 %

Specialty as compared to domestic: 3.61 %

1 % over base nationally yields +0.5 % to BC under the current CFC allocation agreement and the recovery agreement to eastern Canada for periods A-163 and A-164.

Important Reminder: Chick Placement Report BC111 Form:

Growers need to send the BC111 form within seven days after placement. This document is the hatchery’s best measuring stick for chick quality, and it is important that this feedback is received in a timely manner. Please ensure these forms are being sent to the Board as well as to industry. The BC111 is available for download on our website here.

Reminder - Complete your License Application

The 2023 Grower Licenses were emailed last week and are also available on our website under Information for Growers - Forms. Application deadline is December 1, 2022.

Federal and Provincial Government News

In recognition of the market losses triggered by the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA), Canada's Minister of Agriculture and Agri-food, Marie-Claude Bibeau announced additional funds that will increase the pool of funds available under the Poultry and Egg On Farm Investment Program (PEFIP).

If you have already registered with PEFIP, your funding will automatically be adjusted.

Starting in January 2023, BC Ministry of Environment officers will be checking for compliance with the Code of Practice for Agricultural Environmental Management nutrient and application requirements. Be prepared by learning more here.
