In the Spotlight

Improving Our Specialty Referral Process

New specialty-based process benefits patients, clinicians

Aspirus Health is advancing important work to improve our specialty referral process and better serve our patients. The improvements being made are a direct result of the feedback and input we have received from clinicians and patients.

We are moving away from a geographic-based referral process to a specialty-based process. This allows referral coordinators to broaden their scope beyond a single location or practice and manage referral work queues by specialty to select the best appointment for patients based on clinician, distance, timeliness and insurance coverage.

The new specialty referral process will go live in phases over the next several months, starting with Orthopedics and Vision Services on April 5.

The new specialty referral process puts our patients first by helping them better navigate our system and providing timely access to specialty care in the nearest location possible. It also supports our clinicians and practices by creating a standard, cohesive way to refer to a specialist.

Specialty groups and leaders have been engaged throughout the planning process and continue to collaborate as additional specialties move to the new process in the coming months. Any questions can be directed to your local Aspirus Medical Group director who can engage the planning team as appropriate.

Residency Celebrating 45 Years

CME opportunity and retirement celebration on May 5

The Wausau Family Medicine Residency is celebrating 45 years of training physician leaders, advocates and promoters of health. To mark the milestone, the residency program is offering a Continuing Medical Education (CME) opportunity on Friday, May 5, at Westwood Conference Center in Wausau.

The CME opportunity is part of a celebration in recognition of Dr. Kevin O’Connell’s retirement after 44 years of clinical practice.

Online registration and full details on the CME opportunity and a lunch offering are available on the Aspirus public website. Registration is due by April 24 for anyone interested in attending.

Working Creatively to Ensure a Stable, Capable Workforce

Industries across the country are still experiencing workforce challenges exacerbated by the COVID-19 Pandemic. The health care sector is no different. Those challenges were highlighted in the Wisconsin Hospital Association’s 2023 Workforce Report released March 28.

Aspirus has implemented several initiatives to address workforce shortages such as creating health care career pipeline programs for CNAs, medical assistants and phlebotomists. Aspirus has also incorporated many training programs to help potential employees start their health care career and find a path most meaningful to their work life.

ï»żâ€œWe understand that a portion of the health care workforce may have left the industry,” said Deb Ball, Aspirus SVP & Chief Human Resources Officer. “We are working tirelessly to make sure that we have the talent needed to continue to provide patient safety, clinical quality and experience of care that our patients expect from us.”

Dr. Ferguson Now a Spine Intervention Society Instructor

Congratulations to Dr. Kris Ferguson on passing the instructors exam for the Spine Intervention Society (SIS). The exam consists of a rigorous written exam and a cadaver exam. Dr. Ferguson is now one of a very select group of experts who are SIS instructors and will be teaching other pain physicians best practices for interventional pain management.

Thank you, Dr. Ferguson, for taking the initiative to become an instructor and for your dedication to sharing your expertise with your fellow pain physicians to ensure patients receive the highest quality care.

Dr. Ferguson cares for patients at Aspirus Langlade Hospital - Pain Clinic (Antigo) and Aspirus Riverview Clinic - Wisconsin Rapids.

True or False? Eating more plant-based foods has the potential to lower your grocery bill. Answer: TRUE! Eating more plant-based foods has potential for lower grocery bills and food costs. How to Identify a Brain Injury

Each year an estimated 1.5 million Americans sustain a traumatic brain injury (TBI).

A TBI is a sudden injury that causes damage to the brain and may happen when there is a blow, bump, jolt or penetration to the head. Brain injuries can range from mild or minor, such as a concussion, to moderate or severe and resulting in a loss of consciousness.

“Brain injuries of any kind should be taken as serious as any other physical injury and medical advice should be carefully followed to ensure complete recovery,” says Aspirus Medical Surgical Intensive Care Unit Nurse Alissa Zaucha.
