May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month

This May, join us in recognizing Skin Cancer Awareness Month. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, yet it is also one of the most preventable. We encourage everyone to adopt safe sun practices: seek shade during peak hours, wear sun-protective clothing, and regularly apply broad-spectrum sunscreen. Additionally, take a moment to learn about the early signs of skin cancer and perform regular skin checks.

Early detection saves lives. Let's work together to spread awareness and take action to prevent skin cancer.

Walk Pacific Grove Ocean Trail to Monterey

The walking trail that goes from Monterey through Pacific Grove is a slice of heaven. You can simply walk and watch the sea birds and seals or have a rest on a bench and just watch the ocean in front of you. If you love to be outdoors, you’ll enjoy taking a leisurely stroll on this gorgeous walking path. And to top it off it's in our backyard.

Close to the walking path is Point Pinos Lighthouse, the oldest continually operating lighthouse on the West Coast. It’s open 1-4 Thursday-Monday.

When is the Last Time you Had an Eye Exam?
May is Healthy Vision Month

It's Healthy Vision Month, a time to focus on the importance of keeping our eyes healthy. Good vision contributes to overall wellbeing and independence at any age. We encourage you to protect your eyes by wearing sunglasses with UV protection, taking breaks during screen time, and maintaining a diet rich in vision-supporting nutrients.

According too the American Academy of Ophthalmology, approximately 37 million adults in America have age-related macular degeneration, cataract, diabetic retinopathy, or glaucoma, all of which can cause visual impairment or blindness.

Don’t forget to schedule regular eye exams, as they are crucial in detecting vision issues early and preserving your sight. Let's prioritize our eye health this month and beyond!

The presence of the Big Sur Health Center's facility on the Santa Lucia Chapel and Campground property is made possible through the generosity of All Saints Episcopal Church, Carmel-by-the-Sea.
