On The Galt Mile

Our New City Commissioner

John Herbst is our new Fort Lauderdale City Commissioner, elected on November 8. He fills the vacancy caused by the resignation of our former commissioner Heather Moraitis.

John attended his first Galt Mile Advisory Board meeting on November 17 and shared with us his ideas and vision for Fort Lauderdale. He has been briefed on the issues important to the Galt Mile and promises to work closely with us on these issues. Welcome and congratulations to Commissioner John Herbst.

Born in New York City, John graduated from Stuyvesant High School. Following his honorable discharge from the United States Marine Corps, he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Accountancy from Baruch College – City University of New York and later an MBA from the University of North Florida.  John’s private sector experience includes investment banking, Big 4 public accounting, the insurance industry, stockbroker, and entrepreneur. In the public sector, he worked as the Finance Director for both the City of Neptune Beach and several City of Jacksonville agencies. In 2006 John spearheaded the establishment of the City Auditor’s Office for Fort Lauderdale.

Rep LaMarca Reelected

Florida State Rep Chip LaMarca was reelected to another four-year term in the Florida House of Representatives. The Galt Mile Community Association has worked with Chip over the past two years on a number of important issues. We will be working with him in the next legislative session on additional funding for the Galt Ocean Drive renovation, and amendments to the new condo bill to correct some sections that will cause undue hardships to our owners.

We congratulate Chip on his reelection and look forward to working with him in the new legislative session that runs from March 7 thru May 5, 2023.

A native of Winchester, Massachusetts, LaMarca moved to Florida in 1971. Prior to his first election to the Florida House of Representatives in 2014, LaMarca served on the Lighthouse Point City Commission and the Broward County Commission as our commissioner.

Our County Commissioner is Now Mayor Fisher

Broward Commissioner Lamar Fisher was reelected to another four-year term on the county commission, without opposition. His colleagues then elected as Mayor of Broward County for a one-year term, having served as Vice Mayor for the past year.

Lamar attends our Galt meetings on a regular basis and shares with us important information about the county and issues affecting the Galt Mile community. We congratulate him on his reelection, election as Mayor of Broward County, and look forward to working with him on issues of mutual concern.

Previously, Mayor Fisher was the mayor of Pompano Beach and elected to the county commission in 2018. Lamar is a fourth-generation resident of Broward County, and his great-grandfather signed the articles of incorporation for the City of Pompano Beach in 1908. His grandfather also served as Mayor for Pompano Beach in 1943.

The Galt Mile also welcomes our new state senator, Sen. Jason Pizzo, and our new Congressman, Rep. Jared Moskowitz.
