Are you ready to vote?

Want to hear what is inspiring voters?

Dear Will,

We are planning a 'Queer the Vote Event' with the Solano Community College's Pride Club and their Reproductive Health Club on Wednesday, Sept. 18th in the Theater Auditorium in building 1200 at the Fairfield campus that night! Save the date, and invite some friends to come and hear what is informing queer and female voters this year. Also, see the Wed, Sept 4th event to get to know Fairfield/Suisun United School District Board candidates at Gordita's that afternoon.

Drag Queen 'Amelia Need Moore' will be on hand to share a couple of songs. There will be tabling from many groups with info on counseling programs and support groups for many ages. We are so glad to cosponsor the event with the SCC Pride Club and SCC Reproductive Health Club. Don't miss it!

The Solano Pride Center is expanding the number of support groups for various sub groups within our community this fall. If you interested, we can have a training for those interested in helping facilitate groups for Women, Bisexual, HIV+, PFLAG, and other support groups. Send an email to will@solanopride.org for more info, letting him know which night would be best. We are looking to create teams of 2-3 facilitators for each group that would be a mix of staff and volunteers.

Coming Soon! Families in Transition group for parents/families with a Trans child.

Families in Transition, an 8 week group for parents/families to learn how to support and navigate the process with loved ones exploring gender identity. A parallel group will be held at the same time for the youth exploring their gender identity. Email colin@solanopride.org to be added to the waiting list. Our hope is to begin September 24th (Tuesday) 6-7:30pm, but we want to make sure the group will be full!

August 26th is Women's Equality Day

August 26th commemorates the passage of the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution, which gave women the right to vote.

The law passed in 1920, one-hundreds and one years ago, and the US Congress designated August 26 as Women’s Equality Day, in the United States.

The 19th Amendment represents an important milestone in US history, as we seek to perfect our union to benefit all. The Amendment changed Federal law and the face of the American electorate forever. Women won legal recognition as equal citizens under the 19th Amendment. Although at the time, not all women in the US were included under its protections:

  • The voting rights of Native American women were not recognized until 1924.
  • For Chinese American women, 1943, and for Japanese and other Asian American women, 1952.
  • African American women, while quite active in the women’s suffrage movement of the early 19th century, remained barred from voting for decades. With the passage of the Voting Rights Act in 1965, African American women were granted the right to vote.
  • Women's & Trans women's rights to votes have come under fire by GOP policies over the last few years.
