The Last Look Report

A historic sell-off in Japan has rolled over into the U.S. stock market which was already weakened from its own pull-back.

The S&P 500 opened down more than 3% but is slowly climbing off those lows and is down 2.5% 30 minutes before the TSP trade deadline.

The small caps index DWPCF (S-fund) is still down more than 3%

Bonds were last week's winner while stocks sold off. Today the bond ETF BND opened higher but has slipped into negative territory since.

TSP Talk AutoTracker Members

The response by the TSP Talk AutoTracker has been a hard turn to the exit. Nineteen members have made IFTs for today and all but one include holding of the G or F-fund.

Fifteen of the nineteen are moves completely out of stocks. These members see this correction going deeper still.

Only one member, silver 2828, has moved from the G-fund to all-in on the stocks (100% C-fund). They made this move on Saturday.

Average Allocation of the Top 300 AutoTracker Members:

(includes premium members)

G: 10.9%, F: 2.0%, C: 59.1%, S: 21.3.2%, I: 2.9%

Look back to yesterday's report to compare

The S-fund and its investors are dropping out of TSP Talk's top 300. The G-fund still holds half of the top 300 allocations as the S-fund fund, but it has more than doubled since July 22nd, and today it will climb higher.

Top Investors

The 2024 TSP Talk AutoTracker has new leadership. The fallout of the stock market has lifted Booster - 100% G-fund, kjb120169 - 100% G-fund, and joblin20 - 100% F-fund to the top for the year. They will not be going anywhere today.

Joblin20 is capable of climbing higher today if the F-fund gives them a modest return.

Fund Morning Performance

30 minutes before the TSP trade deadline:

The DWCPF (S-fund) is down 3.0%

The ETF EFA (I-fund) is down 2.3%.

The bond ETF BND (F-fund) is down 0.1%

Dow Sinks 920 Points as Global Selloff Intensifies - Turbulence started in Japan, with the Nikkei 225 falling more than 12%, its worst one-day drop since the crash after Black Monday in 1987. Losses cascaded across Europe and the U.S., as investors dumped riskier assets.

What is the Sahm Rule and are investors right to be worried? - The Sahm rule states that a recession begins when the three-month moving average of the U.S. unemployment rate is at least half a percentage point higher than its 12-month low. Friday's weaker-than-expected July jobs report officially triggered the Sahm rule, raising investor concerns that the Federal Reserve may be slow in cutting interest rates to prevent a recession

JTH's Account Talk - This morning the S&P 500 gaped down at the open -3.66% tied as the 3rd worst from 1961. We never know how these things will work out, historically, here's what's happened before.

coolhand's Account Talk - Even smart money may not know when "it" might happen (sometimes they do, but not this time). I would not assume that NAAIM is going to remain bullish. Markets that act like this one currently cannot be trusted.
