Senior Cool Care Program
Are you in need of additional cooling during the summer? The Senior Cool Care Program is a public-private partnership sponsored by Dominion Energy and administered by the Virginia Department for Aging and Rehabilitative Services through the Fairfax Area Agency on Aging that helps low-income older citizens in our jurisdiction keep cool during summer months. The program runs through October 31, 2023. This program does not provide financial assistance, but it provides additional cooling at home, such as fans, for eligible older adults, age 60 and older.

Public Safety Wellness Center Now Open!
This past Monday, Fairfax County Fire and Rescue and Fairfax County Police Departments celebrated the grand opening of their brand-new Public Safety Wellness Center. This center will aid in assisting first responders, professional staff, and volunteers in supporting their behavioral health and well-being. In a profession where traumatic experiences are part of the job; the Fairfax County Public Safety Wellness Center is designed to help better support first responders so they can better support our community members.
|
“It’s a beautiful 7,500 square-foot facility, 15 offices, right now we currently have five clinicians. We’re going to add a few more clinicians so that we have a diverse group of clinicians that can meet a broad public safety population,” said FCFRD Battalion Chief Brian Edmonston, who oversees the Occupational Health Center and Health and Wellness Programs.
The Public Safety Wellness Center is the first of its kind in this area and was designed to provide a welcoming environment equipped with comfortable waiting areas, private counseling areas, and areas for group counseling.
|
“Police officers and firefighters see things that are not normal, and they see things that are not normal at a rate much higher than the rest of the population. To be able to have a place where our officers can go and talk about their experiences, to make sure they are in the best place mentally, to be able to serve this community is the absolute way forward,” said Police Chief Kevin Davis.
“Post traumatic stress is a real thing and kind of cumulative in regard to how it impacts a person’s mind, soul, and body, the whole person,” said Fire Chief John Butler. “And we have to take the stigma off this. The days of being tough and ‘I can handle anything and everything’ sometimes has not be helpful in public safety.”
|
The Public Safety Wellness Center furthers the industry-leading health and wellness program and behavioral health resources available to public safety within Fairfax County. These programs and resources are leading the way in supporting both the physical and behavioral health of Fairfax County public safety professionals.
“We understand that each person’s journey towards wellness is unique, and we are here to provide support every step of the way, as this wellness center will have something for everyone,” said Vera Daniel, Director of the Fairfax County Police Department Health and Wellness Division.

Shredding Event Cohosted with Crime Solvers at Rolling Valley Park & Ride on June 24th
My office received many emails and calls about the cancellation of this year’s free County hosted shred events because of perceived equity issues, the County’s new zero waste policies and workforce shortages. I shared my thoughts on this reasoning in a previous edition of the Herrity Report. Due to high demand, my office and many organizations hosted and are hosting events to provide this important service and support residents. I’d like to thank all organizations that provided this service and shared them with my office to broadcast them.
On June 24th from 9AM to 12PM at Rolling Valley Park and Ride (9220 Old Keene Mill Road in Burke), my office with Crime Solvers is hosting another shred event. Shredding documents is free, although Crime Solvers will be requesting donations to continue their outstanding work. For more information, you can reach my office at SpringfieldBOS@fairfaxcounty.gov or by calling 703-451-8873.

Fairfax County Animal Shelter's "The Heat is On!" Summer Adoption Event
|
The hot summer months are here and nearly every kennel at the Fairfax County Animal Shelter (FCAS) is full of dogs, cats, kittens and even a few small animals like rabbits. The shelter is especially full of dogs, with nearly 100 in its care. FCAS is preparing to undergo required HVAC system maintenance and is putting out an urgent plea for potential adopters to help clear the kennels.
To help bring attention to the high number of adoptable pets, especially dogs, the FCAS is hosting a four-day adoption event, Thursday, through Sunday, June 22-25. Adoption fees for all dogs will be waived, and fees for all other pets will be 50% off. Shelter volunteers have fun activities planned throughout the adoption event, including a demonstration of how to help dogs create painted canvas artwork and other enrichment ideas! If you'd like to learn about the adoption event, visit here for more information.
