Traffic Pattern Update

The Larchmont Police Department would like to remind the community that the traffic pattern has been modified to improve pedestrian safety around Chatsworth Avenue School. On school days between 7:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., Wendt Avenue will be restricted to one-way traffic, allowing vehicles to travel only northbound from Forest Park Avenue to Summit Avenue.

Stop For School Buses!

Many students rely on school buses to get them to and from school safely.

Did You Know: School buses are the most regulated vehicles on the road; they’re designed to be safer than passenger vehicles in preventing crashes and injuries; and in every state, stop-arm laws exist to protect children from other motorists.

If you are driving, remember these simple rules:

  • Yellow flashing lights indicate the bus is preparing to stop to load or unload children. You should slow down and prepare to stop your vehicle.
  • Red flashing lights and extended stop arms indicate the bus has stopped and children are getting on or off. You must stop your car and wait until the red lights stop flashing, the extended stop-arm is withdrawn, and the bus begins moving, before you can start driving again.
  • Even when lights aren’t flashing, watch for children, particularly in the morning or mid-afternoon, around school arrival and dismissal times. Be alert as you back out of a driveway, or drive through a neighborhood, school zone or bus stop.

Parents - talk bus safety with your children:

Your child should arrive at the bus stop at least 5 minutes before the bus is scheduled to arrive. Teach them to play it SAFE:

  • Stay at least ten feet — five giant steps — away from the curb.
  • Always wait until the bus comes to a complete stop and the bus driver signals for you to board.
  • Face forward after finding a seat on the bus.
  • Exit the bus after it stops and look left-right-left for cars before crossing a street.

As a reminder, effective May 1st, the use of both electric and gas-powered leaf blowers is prohibited in Larchmont. Electric leaf blowers will be permitted starting October 15th.

Know before you Go!

Protect your home

  • While longer-term home improvement needs to be done well ahead of time, when a storm threatens there are short-term actions to help protect your property. Board up windows, secure loose outdoor items, and secure all exterior doors. Move your vehicle to a safe location if you’re not using it to evacuate. If you are evacuating, unplug electrical equipment such as radios, televisions and small appliances (freezers and refrigerators also need to be unplugged if there is a risk of flooding). If you are instructed to do so, shut off water, gas and electricity before leaving.

Do you know what to do when a storm threatens? Prepare for hurricane season by taking the time now to understand the actions needed when time is of the essence.

Children and Fire

Children “playing” with or starting fires is dangerous and costly. Each year these fires cause hundreds of injuries, millions of dollars in damage, and are most likely to kill young children under the age of 5.

Safety Tips from The Town of Mamaroneck/Village of Larchmont Volunteer Ambulance Corps

Travel to School Safely!

As the summer ends, we want to wish the youngest members of our community a safe and healthy school year. Whether you walk, bike, ride the bus or hitch a ride in a car to and from school, it’s important to do so safely!

The National Safety Council shares important tips that will help keep everyone safe and healthy throughout the school year.

Walkers:

·        Parents should review their family's walking safety rules and practice walking to school with their child.

·        Walk on the sidewalk, if one is available; when on a street with no sidewalk, walk facing traffic

·        Before you cross the street, stop and look left, right and left again to see if cars are coming

·        Make eye contact with drivers before crossing, and always cross streets at crosswalks or intersections

·        Stay alert and avoid distracted walking

Bike Riders:

·        Parents should teach their child the rules of the road and practice riding the bike route to school with their child

·        Ride on the right side of the road, with traffic, and in a single file

·        Come to a complete stop before crossing the street; walk bikes across the street

·        Stay alert and avoid distracted riding

·        Make sure your child always wears a properly fitted helmet and bright clothing

Driving Your Child to School:

·        Stay alert and avoid distracted driving.

·        Obey school zone speed limits and follow your school's drop-off procedure

·        Make eye contact with children who are crossing the street

·        Never pass a bus loading or unloading children

·        The area 10 feet around a school bus is the most dangerous for children; stop far enough back to allow them to safely enter and exit the bus
