The 517 Hispanic Heritage Weekend takes place during Hispanic Heritage Month with a weekend of fun, education, and entertainment, in the Downtown District of Michigan’s State Capital. Every year, National Hispanic Heritage Month is observed from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 through events, the celebration of culture, and through educational opportunities. As Hispanic Heritage Month is meant to honor Hispanic communities, Ourspace (517) seeks to highlight the diverse Hispanic cultures represented in Mid-Michigan and beyond.
Connecting Hispanic-led organizations, initiatives, and businesses, Ourspace (517) works as a bridge that promotes the celebration of diversity and culture, economic growth for Hispanic businesses in the 517 and beyond, the consumption of Hispanic art, music, and cuisine, and much more. The 517 Hispanic Heritage Weekend seeks to honor and recognize all cultures and contributions of American citizens who originated or whose ancestors originated from Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, South America, and Spain.
September Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Series Recap
“People are the most important part.” - Dr. Ashley Baker (she/her), vice president of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging, MSUFCU.
During the September DEI Series program, Dr. Baker spoke about creating a culture of inclusion and belonging in the workplace and emphasized the importance of people feeling engaged and connected to their organization. It's key that people see their organization as a space where they can be their best selves and have the resources available to them to help them do that.

It also celebrates the potential of all women as leaders of the community and recognizes those who support them. The nomination form is available below.
Overview: The October Diversity, Equity and Inclusion series will be led by Lori Simon, MPA, CDM, CTA, president and principal consultant, SimonSezConsulting, LLC, and focus on embracing a dialogue about gender equity and intersectionality.

In the drive for gender equity, organizations must acknowledge the need for fully inclusive gender equity that recognizes the intersectionality of race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and other dimensions of identity. Efforts to improve women representation in the leadership roles must include women from all backgrounds and experiences. When intersectionality considerations are incorporated into gender equity strategies, organizations can reap tangible, proven benefits including better talent recruitment and retention, stronger DEI outcomes, and improved organizational performance.
