March 18, 2020 | JNCL Announcement

During these unprecedented times, our thoughts are with everyone affected by the novel coronavirus pandemic, including our teachers, association members, and industry leaders. As COVID-19 continues to impact the language enterprise in unpredictable ways and timeframes, JNCL-NCLIS is committed to supporting our members.

This blog post features a running list of resources for teachers starting e-learning experiences, translators and interpreters looking for support, and miscellaneous language enterprise related tools. News articles and supplemental resources will continue to be available in our weekly NewsBrief and on our social media channels.

We will continue to represent the language enterprise in our nation's capital and advance our legislative and policy agenda, sharing developments as they occur. In the meantime, we wish health and safety to you and your families.

Gig workers and self-employed workers get a new form of paid sick and family leave: Experts say one of the most innovative parts of the House bill is that it gives gig workers and self-employed similar benefits to Americans working at small and midsize companies. People who are self-employed but work for another employer — e.g. Lyft and Uber drivers, caterers or planners for major events like South by Southwest — are eligible for a tax credit of up to two weeks of sick pay at their average pay and 12 weeks of family leave pay at two-thirds their normal rate.

These workers must show they had to comply with a self-isolation recommendation or that they had to care for a child whose school closed due to the coronavirus. Their benefit is capped at $511 per day for paid sick leave and $200 for family leave (or the average daily income the person usually receives if it is less than those amounts).

March 9, 2020 | Associations Now
In a letter to White House economic advisor Larry Kudlow, ASAE says that associations shouldn’t be left out of conversations regarding aid packages related to the coronavirus.

With the coronavirus creating major impacts around the world, the White House is looking into various solutions to aid communities and industries hurt economically by the epidemic.

ASAE is working to make clear that associations should be a part of that conversation. On March 6, ASAE President and CEO Susan Robertson, CAE,  sent a letter to White House economic advisor Larry Kudlow   making the case for associations to receive relief in response to the significant number of event cancellations and changes in recent weeks.

As the nation comes together to help stop the spread of COVID-19 throughout our communities and most vulnerable populations, Mango is making their  Mango Classroom offering  freely available to all schools facing closures through the end of the 2019-2020 school year.
