495 NEXT LANE CLOSURES & TRAFFIC CHANGES

August 26 - August 30, 2024

The following construction-related lane closures and traffic changes are planned in the I-495 Express Lanes Northern Extension (495 NEXT) project corridor. Travelers may encounter delays in this area. All work is subject to change based on weather and other factors.

Lane Closures 

I-495 (CAPITAL BELTWAY)


Monday, August 26, through Thursday, August 29, 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Single left and/or right lane closure on southbound I-495 between George Washington Memorial Parkway and Lewinsville Road for road widening work.


Monday, August 26, through Thursday, August 29, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Single left and/or right lane closure on northbound I-495 between Lewinsville Road and George Washington Memorial Parkway for road widening work.


Monday, August 26, through Thursday, August 29, 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Triple lane closures with periodic total traffic stoppages on north- and southbound I-495 between George Washington Memorial Parkway and Dulles Toll Road for demolition of the old Live Oak Drive Bridge, overhead sign work, and girder setting at the new Old Dominion Drive Bridge. One lane will remain open, with full traffic stoppages of up to 30 minutes each occurring between midnight and 5 a.m.

Friday, August 30, 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Single lane closure on north- and/or southbound I-495 throughout the project corridor as needed for maintenance work and traffic management.


George Washington Memorial Parkway to I-495 South


Monday August 26, through Thursday, August 29, 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

The on-ramp from north/westbound George Washington Memorial Parkway to southbound I-495 will be closed for bridge deck repair work. A signed detour will be in place directing motorists across the American Legion Bridge into Maryland, to Clara Barton Parkway (Exit 41), and then back toward Virginia.

LIVE OAK DRIVE


Monday, August 26, through Thursday, August 29, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Friday, August 30, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Live Oak Drive will be reduced to a single lane between the Langley Swim and Tennis Club and Balls Hill Road for paving, sidewalk, drainage and retaining wall construction. Flagging operations alternating single traffic lanes will be in effect. Flagging operations may occur during weeknight overnight hours (9 p.m. to 5 a.m.) if needed.

GEORGETOWN PIKE INTERCHANGE


Monday, August 26, 12 a.m. to 5 a.m.

Georgetown Pike will be reduced from 5 lanes to 2 lanes between Balls Hill Road and Linganore Drive for shifting traffic to the new Georgetown Pike Bridge. One lane will remain open in each direction (east- and westbound). All ramps between I-495 and Georgetown Pike will be closed with detours in effect.

OLD DOMINION DRIVE


Monday, August 26, through Thursday, August 29, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. and Friday, August 30, 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Old Dominion Drive will be reduced to a single lane between Dominion Court and Dulany Drive for bridge girder setting. Flagging operations alternating single traffic lanes will be in effect. Click here for more information about the girder setting work at the new Old Dominion Drive Bridge.

DULLES CORRIDOR INTERCHANGE 


Dulles Toll Road


Monday, August 26, 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Single lane closure on Eastbound Dulles Toll Road (267 Connector) near the I-495 interchange for bridge work.


Monday, August 26, through Thursday, August 29, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Right shoulder closure on westbound Dulles Toll Road (267 Connector) from I-66 to Chain Bridge Road (Route 123) for overhead sign work.


Tuesday, August 27, and Wednesday, August 28, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The ramp from the westbound Dulles Toll Road to southbound Chain Bridge Road (Route 123) will be narrowed for guard rail installation.


Dulles Airport Access Road


Monday, August 26, through Tuesday, August 27, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Single right or left lane closure on the eastbound Dulles Airport Access Road near the I-495 interchange for bridge work.

Traffic Changes

New Exit Ramp for I-495 North Exit to Dulles Toll Road


Reminder: Motorists traveling on northbound I-495 heading for westbound Dulles Toll Road must take a new, earlier exit. The new exit ramp is located about one-third of a mile ahead of the old, closed Exit 45. To facilitate this new traffic pattern, I-495 has been reduced from four to three lanes for approximately one-half mile near the Dulles Corridor interchange.

George Washington Memorial Parkway West at I-495


Reminder: The ramp from westbound George Washington Memorial Parkway to southbound I-495 (Capital Beltway) was reduced from two lanes to one lane to make room for a construction vehicle haul route that will be separated from traffic by a physical barrier. This traffic change will be in effect throughout construction on the 495 NEXT project.

Project Background

The I-495 Express Lanes Northern Extension (495 NEXT) project will extend the existing 495 Express Lanes north by two-and-a-half miles from the Dulles Corridor interchange to the George Washington Memorial Parkway interchange in the vicinity of the American Legion Bridge. The project will provide new and improved connections at the Dulles Corridor and George Washington Memorial Parkway.


Other project benefits include four miles of new bicycle and pedestrian connections including a shared-use path parallel to I-495 from Lewinsville Road to near Live Oak Drive, replacement or rehabilitation of seven bridges with pedestrian accommodations, replacement of nine existing noise walls and construction of a new noise wall, environmental improvements introducing stormwater management facilities and funding of restoration at Scott's Run stream, and dedicated funding to support transit improvements in the corridor including new bus service over the American Legion Bridge. 

 

495 NEXT is a public-private partnership project between the Commonwealth of Virginia and Transurban, operator of the existing 495 Express Lanes. Lane Construction is the design-build contractor for the project. The new extended lanes are scheduled to open in 2025.
