The following construction-related lane closures and traffic changes are planned in the I-495 Express Lanes Northern Extension (495 NEXT) project corridor. Travelers may encounter delays in this area. All work is subject to change based on weather and other factors.

I-495 (CAPITAL BELTWAY)


Monday, August 19, through Thursday, August 22, 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Single left and/or right lane closure on southbound I-495 between George Washington Memorial Parkway and Lewinsville Road for median work and bridge inspections.


Monday, August 19, through Thursday, August 22, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Single left and/or right lane closure on northbound I-495 between Lewinsville Road and George Washington Memorial Parkway for bridge inspections.


Monday, August 19, through Thursday, August 22, 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Triple lane closures with periodic total traffic stoppages on north- and southbound I-495 between George Washington Memorial Parkway and Dulles Toll Road for demolition of the old Live Oak Drive Bridge, overhead sign work, and girder setting at the new Old Dominion Drive Bridge. One lane will remain open, with full traffic stoppages of up to 30 minutes each occurring between midnight and 5 a.m.

Friday, August 23, 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Single lane closure on north- and/or southbound I-495 throughout the project corridor as needed for maintenance work and traffic management.


George Washington Memorial Parkway to I-495 South


Friday, August 16, at 10 p.m. through Saturday, August 17, at 4 p.m.

The on-ramp from north/westbound George Washington Memorial Parkway to southbound I-495 will be closed for bridge deck repair work. A signed detour will be in place directing motorists across the American Legion Bridge into Maryland, to Clara Barton Parkway (Exit 41), and then back toward Virginia.

LIVE OAK DRIVE


Friday, August 16, 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Live Oak Drive will be reduced to a single lane at the bridge over I-495 to shift traffic onto the new Live Oak Drive Bridge. Flagging operations alternating single traffic lanes will be in effect.

Sunday, August 18, 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m., Monday, August 19, through Thursday, August 22, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Friday, August 23, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Live Oak Drive will be reduced to a single lane between the intersection of offshoot/private Live Oak Drive and Balls Hill Road for paving, sidewalk, drainage and retaining wall construction. Flagging operations alternating single traffic lanes will be in effect. Flagging operations may occur during weeknight overnight hours (9 p.m. to 5 a.m.) if needed.

BALLS HILL ROAD


Friday, August 16, 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Balls Hill Road will be reduced to a single lane at the Live Oak Drive intersection to shift traffic onto the new Live Oak Drive Bridge. Flagging operations alternating single traffic lanes will be in effect.

Sunday, August 18, 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Balls Hill Road will be reduced to a single lane between Live Oak Drive and Benjamin Street for paving work. Flagging operations alternating single traffic lanes will be in effect.


Monday, August 19, and Tuesday, August 20, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Wednesday, August 21, through Friday, August 23, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Balls Hill Road will be reduced to a single lane between Live Oak Drive and Georgetown Pike for bridge work. Flagging operations alternating single traffic lanes will be in effect.

GEORGETOWN PIKE INTERCHANGE


Sunday, August 18, through Thursday, August 22, 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Single or double lane closure on east- and westbound Georgetown Pike between Balls Hill Road and Linganore Drive for bridge construction and paving work.


Sunday, August 18 through Thursday, August 22, 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Single lane closures and ramp narrowing on the Georgetown Pike on-ramp to northbound I-495, the northbound I-495 exit ramp to Georgetown Pike, and the southbound I-495 exit ramp to Georgetown Pike for paving work.


Monday, August 19, through Friday, August 23, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Single lane closure on east- and westbound Georgetown Pike between Balls Hill Road and Linganore Drive for bridge construction work.


Continuously from Friday, August 23, at 9 p.m. to Monday, August 26, at 5 a.m.

Georgetown Pike will be reduced from 5 lanes to 2 lanes between Balls Hill Road and Linganore Drive for shifting traffic to the new Georgetown Pike Bridge. One lane will remain open in each direction (east- and westbound). All ramps between I-495 and Georgetown Pike will be closed with detours in effect.

OLD DOMINION DRIVE


Monday, August 19, through Thursday, August 22, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. and Friday, August 23, 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Old Dominion Drive will be reduced to a single lane between Dominion Court and Dulany Drive for equipment mobilization and bridge girder setting. Flagging operations alternating single traffic lanes will be in effect.

DULLES CORRIDOR INTERCHANGE 


Dulles Toll Road


Monday, August 19, through Thursday, August 22, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Single lane closure on westbound Dulles Toll Road (267 Connector) from just before Chain Bridge Road (Route 123) to the I-495 interchange for materials delivery.

Traffic Changes

New Exit Ramp for I-495 North Exit to Dulles Toll Road


Reminder: Motorists traveling on northbound I-495 heading for westbound Dulles Toll Road must take a new, earlier exit. The new exit ramp is located about one-third of a mile ahead of the old, closed Exit 45. To facilitate this new traffic pattern, I-495 has been reduced from four to three lanes for approximately one-half mile near the Dulles Corridor interchange.

George Washington Memorial Parkway West at I-495


Reminder: The ramp from westbound George Washington Memorial Parkway to southbound I-495 (Capital Beltway) was reduced from two lanes to one lane to make room for a construction vehicle haul route that will be separated from traffic by a physical barrier. This traffic change will be in effect throughout construction on the 495 NEXT project.

Project Background

The I-495 Express Lanes Northern Extension (495 NEXT) project will extend the existing 495 Express Lanes north by two-and-a-half miles from the Dulles Corridor interchange to the George Washington Memorial Parkway interchange in the vicinity of the American Legion Bridge. The project will provide new and improved connections at the Dulles Corridor and George Washington Memorial Parkway.


Other project benefits include four miles of new bicycle and pedestrian connections including a shared-use path parallel to I-495 from Lewinsville Road to near Live Oak Drive, replacement or rehabilitation of seven bridges with pedestrian accommodations, replacement of nine existing noise walls and construction of a new noise wall, environmental improvements introducing stormwater management facilities and funding of restoration at Scott's Run stream, and dedicated funding to support transit improvements in the corridor including new bus service over the American Legion Bridge. 

 

495 NEXT is a public-private partnership project between the Commonwealth of Virginia and Transurban, operator of the existing 495 Express Lanes. Lane Construction is the design-build contractor for the project. The new extended lanes are scheduled to open in 2025.
