495 NEXT LANE CLOSURES & TRAFFIC CHANGES

The following construction-related lane closures and traffic changes are planned in the I-495 Express Lanes Northern Extension (495 NEXT) project corridor. Travelers may encounter delays in this area. All work is subject to change based on weather and other factors.

Lane Closures 

I-495 (CAPITAL BELTWAY)


Monday, July 1, and Tuesday, July 2, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Wednesday, July 3, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Single lane closure on northbound I-495 between Lewinsville Road and George Washington Memorial Parkway for road widening work.


Monday, July 1, and Tuesday, July 2, 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and Wednesday, July 3, 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Single lane closure on southbound I-495 between Live Oak Drive and Dulles Toll Road for road widening work.

LIVE OAK DRIVE


Monday, July 1, and Tuesday, July 2, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m

Live Oak Drive will be reduced to a single lane at the bridge over I-495 for concrete pouring operations. Flagging operations alternating single traffic lanes will be in effect.

GEORGETOWN PIKE INTERCHANGE


Monday, July 1, and Tuesday, July 2, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Single lane closure on east- and westbound Georgetown Pike between Balls Hill Road and Linganore Drive for hauling and drainage work.

OLD DOMINION DRIVE


Monday, July 1, and Tuesday, July 2, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Old Dominion Drive will be reduced to a single lane between Dominion Court and Dulany Drive for bridge work. Flagging operations alternating single traffic lanes will be in effect.

DULLES CORRIDOR INTERCHANGE 


Dulles Toll Road


Monday, July 1, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Single lane closure on eastbound Dulles Toll Road (267 Connector) from the I-495 interchange to Rt. 123 for materials delivery.


Monday, July 1, and Tuesday, July 2, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Single lane closure on westbound Dulles Toll Road (267 Connector) from Rt. 123 to the I-495 interchange for materials delivery.


Dulles Airport Access Highway


Monday, July 1, and Tuesday, July 2, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Right lane closure on westbound Dulles Airport Access Highway in the project corridor for pouring concrete barrier work.

Traffic Changes

New Exit Ramp for I-495 North Exit to Dulles Toll Road


Reminder: Motorists traveling on northbound I-495 heading for westbound Dulles Toll Road must take a new, earlier exit. The new exit ramp is located about one-third of a mile ahead of the old, closed Exit 45. To facilitate this new traffic pattern, I-495 has been reduced from four to three lanes for approximately one-half mile near the Dulles Corridor interchange.

George Washington Memorial Parkway West at I-495


Reminder: The ramp from westbound George Washington Memorial Parkway to southbound I-495 (Capital Beltway) was reduced from two lanes to one lane to make room for a construction vehicle haul route that will be separated from traffic by a physical barrier. This traffic change will be in effect throughout construction on the 495 NEXT project.

Project Background

The I-495 Express Lanes Northern Extension (495 NEXT) project will extend the existing 495 Express Lanes north by two-and-a-half miles from the Dulles Corridor interchange to the George Washington Memorial Parkway interchange in the vicinity of the American Legion Bridge. The project will provide new and improved connections at the Dulles Corridor and George Washington Memorial Parkway.


Other project benefits include four miles of new bicycle and pedestrian connections including a shared-use path parallel to I-495 from Lewinsville Road to near Live Oak Drive, replacement or rehabilitation of seven bridges with pedestrian accommodations, replacement of nine existing noise walls and construction of a new noise wall, environmental improvements introducing stormwater management facilities and funding of restoration at Scott's Run stream, and dedicated funding to support transit improvements in the corridor including new bus service over the American Legion Bridge. 

 

495 NEXT is a public-private partnership project between the Commonwealth of Virginia and Transurban, operator of the existing 495 Express Lanes. Lane Construction is the design-build contractor for the project. The new extended lanes are scheduled to open in 2025.
