495 NEXT LANE CLOSURES & TRAFFIC CHANGES

June 16 - June 22, 2024

The following construction-related lane closures and traffic changes are planned in the I-495 Express Lanes Northern Extension (495 NEXT) project corridor. Travelers may encounter delays in this area. All work is subject to change based on weather and other factors.

What's Happening This Weekend

  • Westbound Georgetown Pike – Nighttime double right lane closure from Sunday, June 16 at 9 p.m. to Monday, June 17, at 5 a.m. for a bridge deck pouring operation. The remaining lanes on the bridge will be shifted to accommodate turn and thru lanes in both directions, and stoplights will be adjusted. Learn more about the work here.

Monday, June 17, Tuesday, June 18, and Thursday, June 20, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Friday, June 14, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Single right lane closure on northbound I-495 between Lewinsville Road and George Washington Memorial Parkway for road widening work. As needed, this closure may change to an alternating single mobile lane closure for maintenance work and traffic management throughout the project corridor.


Monday, June 17, Tuesday, June 18, and Thursday, June 20, 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and Friday, June 14, 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Single right lane closure on southbound I-495 between Live Oak Drive and Dulles Toll Road for road widening work. As needed, this closure may change to an alternating single mobile lane closure for maintenance work and traffic management throughout the project corridor.


Monday, June 17, through Thursday, June 20, 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m., Friday, June 121, 10 p.m. to 8 a.m., and Saturday, June 22, 10 p.m. to 9 a.m.

Single left lane closure on northbound I-495 between Exit 45 and Lewinsville Road for bridge demolition work at the Dulles Corridor interchange.

LIVE OAK DRIVE


Tuesday, June 18, through Friday, June 14, 4 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Live Oak Drive will be reduced to a single lane at the bridge over I-495 for concrete pouring operations. Flagging operations alternating single traffic lanes will be in effect.

GEORGETOWN PIKE INTERCHANGE


Sunday, June 16, from 9 p.m. to Monday, June 17, at 5 a.m.

Double right lane closure on westbound Georgetown Pike at the bridge over I-495 to accommodate a bridge deck pouring operation. The remaining lanes on the bridge will be shifted to accommodate turn and thru lanes in both directions, and stoplights will be adjusted. Learn more about the work here.

Right shoulder closure with encroachment into the right lane on the exit ramp from northbound I-495 to Georgetown Pike for directional boring work.

Single right lane closure on westbound Georgetown Pike between Balls Hill Road and the I-495 interchange for hauling work.

OLD DOMINION DRIVE


Monday, June 17, through Friday, June 21, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Old Dominion Drive will be reduced to a single lane between Dominion Court and Dulany Drive for bridge work. Flagging operations alternating single traffic lanes will be in effect.

Right shoulder closure on eastbound Dulles Toll Road (Route 267) from Spring Hill Road to the I-495 interchange for trenching and testing work.


Monday, June 17, Tuesday, June 18, Thursday, June 20, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. and Friday, June 21, 10 p.m. to 9 a.m.

Single lane closure on westbound Dulles Toll Road (267 Connector) from Rt. 123 to the I-495 interchange for roadway and striping work.


Monday, June 17, Tuesday, June 18, Thursday, June 20, and Friday, June 21, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Single right lane closure on westbound Dulles Airport Access Highway (DAAH) at the I-495 interchange for concrete pouring work.


Monday, June 17, through Saturday, June 22, 8 p.m. to 4 a.m.

The ramp from eastbound Dulles Toll Road/Airport Access Road (Route 267) to northbound I-495 will be closed for bridge demolition work. Motorists will be detoured onto I-495 South using Exit 18A, then will take Exit 46B and continue in the ramp lane to immediately exit onto I-495 North. Learn more about the work and detour here.

Traffic Changes

New Exit Ramp for I-495 North Exit to Dulles Toll Road


Reminder: Motorists traveling on northbound I-495 heading for westbound Dulles Toll Road must take a new, earlier exit. The new exit ramp is located about one-third of a mile ahead of the old, closed Exit 45. To facilitate this new traffic pattern, I-495 has been reduced from four to three lanes for approximately one-half mile near the Dulles Corridor interchange.

George Washington Memorial Parkway West at I-495


Reminder: The ramp from westbound George Washington Memorial Parkway to southbound I-495 (Capital Beltway) was reduced from two lanes to one lane to make room for a construction vehicle haul route that will be separated from traffic by a physical barrier. This traffic change will be in effect throughout construction on the 495 NEXT project.

Project Background

The I-495 Express Lanes Northern Extension (495 NEXT) project will extend the existing 495 Express Lanes north by two-and-a-half miles from the Dulles Corridor interchange to the George Washington Memorial Parkway interchange in the vicinity of the American Legion Bridge. The project will provide new and improved connections at the Dulles Corridor and George Washington Memorial Parkway.


Other project benefits include four miles of new bicycle and pedestrian connections including a shared-use path parallel to I-495 from Lewinsville Road to near Live Oak Drive, replacement or rehabilitation of seven bridges with pedestrian accommodations, replacement of nine existing noise walls and construction of a new noise wall, environmental improvements introducing stormwater management facilities and funding of restoration at Scott's Run stream, and dedicated funding to support transit improvements in the corridor including new bus service over the American Legion Bridge. 

 

495 NEXT is a public-private partnership project between the Commonwealth of Virginia and Transurban, operator of the existing 495 Express Lanes. Lane Construction is the design-build contractor for the project. The new extended lanes are scheduled to open in 2025.
