The following construction-related lane closures and traffic changes are planned in the I-495 Express Lanes Northern Extension (495 NEXT) project corridor. Travelers may encounter delays in this area. All work is subject to change based on weather and other factors.

  • GWMP North Parkway Rehabilitation Project Work The National Park Service (NPS) will close the exit ramp from George Washington Memorial Parkway (GWMP) to I-495 from 8 p.m. today, Friday, May 31, until 5 a.m. on Monday, June 3. Click here for more information from NPS.

Friday, May 31, 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.

Double left lane closures on northbound I-495 between Lewinsville Road and Georgetown Pike for bridge work.


Monday, June 3, through Thursday, June 6, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Single right lane closure on northbound I-495 between Lewinsville Road and George Washington Memorial Parkway for excavation, embankment, wall, drainage, and bridge work. As needed, this closure may change to an alternating single mobile lane closure for maintenance work and traffic management throughout the project corridor.


Monday, June 3, through Thursday, June 6, 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Single right lane closure on southbound I-495 between Live Oak Drive and Dulles Toll Road for excavation, embankment, wall, drainage, and bridge work. As needed, this closure may change to an alternating single mobile lane closure for maintenance work and traffic management throughout the project corridor.


Monday, June 3, through Thursday, June 6, 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. and Friday, June 7, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Alternating single mobile lane closure on north- and southbound I-495 throughout the project corridor as needed for maintenance work and traffic management.


Friday, June 7, 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.

Multi-lane closures on northbound I-495 between Route 123 and south of Georgetown Pike bridge for traffic shift preparatory work. If needed, this work will be pushed to Saturday, June 8.


Friday, June 7, 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Double right lane closure on southbound I-495 between George Washington Memorial Parkway and Georgetown Pike for bridge deck pouring operation. Additionally, the on-ramp from the collector-distributor road to southbound I-495 will be closed between midnight and 5 a.m. for this work. Drivers traveling on the collector-distributor road to access I-495 South will be detoured to the exit for Georgetown Pike (exit 44) and will continue to the on-ramp from Georgetown Pike to I-495 South.

LIVE OAK DRIVE


Monday, June 3, through Friday, June 7, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Live Oak Drive will be reduced to a single lane near the swim club and bridge for asphalt demolition. Flagging operations alternating single traffic lanes will be in effect.

BALLS HILL ROAD


Monday, June 3, through Friday, June 7, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Balls Hill Road will be reduced to a single lane between Benjamin Street and Live Oak Drive for sound wall and retaining wall excavation work. Flagging operations alternating single traffic lanes will be in effect.

GEORGETOWN PIKE INTERCHANGE


Monday, June 3, through Friday, June 7, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., and Saturday, June 8, 10 p.m. to 9 a.m.

Single lane closure on east- and westbound Georgetown Pike near Balls Hill Road for drainage and hauling work.

DULLES CORRIDOR INTERCHANGE 


Dulles Toll Road


Monday, June 3, through Friday, June 7, 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Single right lane closure on eastbound Dulles Toll Road (Route 267) from Spring Hill Road to the I-495 interchange for trenching and conduit work.


Monday, June 3, through Thursday, June 6, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Single left lane closure on westbound Dulles Toll Road (267 Connector) from Rt. 123 to the I-495 interchange for roadway work.


Monday, June 3, through Friday, June 7, 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Double lane closure on eastbound Dulles Toll Road (Route 267) between International Drive and the I-495 interchange for temporary barrier work.

Other Traffic Impacts

George Washington Memorial Parkway North Parkway Rehabilitation Project


Starting Friday, May 31, the National Park Service will close the exit ramp from George Washington Memorial Parkway (GWMP) to I-495. The ramp will be closed from 8 p.m. on Friday until 5 a.m. on Monday, June 3. Northbound GWMP traffic must exit at Route 123 and follow signage to I-495. Southbound GWMP will remain open.

Traffic Changes

New Exit Ramp for I-495 North Exit to Dulles Toll Road


Reminder: Motorists traveling on northbound I-495 heading for westbound Dulles Toll Road must take a new, earlier exit. The new exit ramp is located about one-third of a mile ahead of the old, closed Exit 45. To facilitate this new traffic pattern, I-495 has been reduced from four to three lanes for approximately one-half mile near the Dulles Corridor interchange.

George Washington Memorial Parkway West at I-495


Reminder: The ramp from westbound George Washington Memorial Parkway to southbound I-495 (Capital Beltway) was reduced from two lanes to one lane to make room for a construction vehicle haul route that will be separated from traffic by a physical barrier. This traffic change will be in effect throughout construction on the 495 NEXT project.

Project Background

The I-495 Express Lanes Northern Extension (495 NEXT) project will extend the existing 495 Express Lanes north by two-and-a-half miles from the Dulles Corridor interchange to the George Washington Memorial Parkway interchange in the vicinity of the American Legion Bridge. The project will provide new and improved connections at the Dulles Corridor and George Washington Memorial Parkway.


Other project benefits include four miles of new bicycle and pedestrian connections including a shared-use path parallel to I-495 from Lewinsville Road to near Live Oak Drive, replacement or rehabilitation of seven bridges with pedestrian accommodations, replacement of nine existing noise walls and construction of a new noise wall, environmental improvements introducing stormwater management facilities and funding of restoration at Scott's Run stream, and dedicated funding to support transit improvements in the corridor including new bus service over the American Legion Bridge. 

 

495 NEXT is a public-private partnership project between the Commonwealth of Virginia and Transurban, operator of the existing 495 Express Lanes. Lane Construction is the design-build contractor for the project. The new extended lanes are scheduled to open in 2025.
