Wage Survey

ATTENTION ALL ACTIVE MEMBERS!

The 2024 landscape horticulture industry wage survey is out, and your participation is crucial. Thanks to our streamlined process, it's now easier than ever to complete.

We need your help. The CNLA (Canadian Nursery Landscape Association) is taking on a vital initiative to collect comprehensive data on wages across all horticulture sectors in every region of the country. Participation is easy and confidential. All data is presented in summary form only - individual responses will not be accessible except for the process of data compilation. Simply complete the survey questionnaire with accurate information reflecting your organization's wage practices. We suggest having your current hourly wage allocations handy, as this will save you time.

Responses will be combined and made confidential to protect your privacy and ensure the accuracy and security of the data.

Participating in this survey guarantees you a FREE summary of the results/trends (valued at $140). Industry members who do not participate will be required to pay for full access to the final report. Your input is crucial to shaping industry standards. Let's make a difference together!

Update on elm wilt found in Alberta

Plenodomus tracheiphilus, not Dothiorella ulmi, has caused wilt disease on elm trees in Alberta

  • From 2016-2023, the Alberta Plant Health Lab (APHL) tested 200 elm trees across Alberta for DED and other elm diseases.
  • Using the latest molecular techniques, APHL determined that a fungus that was thought to be Dothiorella ulmi all these years was actually Plenodomus tracheiphilus, causing the elm wilt symptoms.
  • This is of significant interest to research scientists, municipalities and industry, primarily because P. tracheiphilus is a major pathogen of citrus crops everywhere citrus is grown and all citrus species are affected. It has never been found on elm.

For more information, the research paper can be found here.

CAF-FCA Webinar: Apprenticeship Registration Trends and Completion Rates

Join CAF-FCA and guest speaker, Dominique Skubnik, to learn about apprenticeship registration trends and completion rates based on the latest Registered Apprenticeship Information System data from Statistics Canada. Data is analyzed based upon trade and gender. Key highlights include:

On average, completion rates in the 15 largest Red Seal trade programs are higher for men apprentices than for women apprentices. In 2022, men had a 46% completion rate and women had a 36% completion rate. Men have significantly higher completion rates than women in the heavy-duty equipment technician, carpenter, plumber and steamfitter/pipefitter trades.

In 2022, higher numbers of women completed their programs in the industrial electrician, construction electrician, refrigeration and air conditioning mechanic and sheet metal worker trades than they did in 2017.

TFWP - Wage Reminder

Wage data from Statistics Canada’s Labour Force Survey is used to inform the administration of the TFW Program. Each year, the data on provincial and territorial median wages is used to determine whether a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) application falls under the Low-Wage or High-Wage Stream. Employers must submit their application under the stream for low-wage positions if they offer a wage that is below the provincial or territorial median hourly wage for the position requested in the LMIA. Alternatively they should submit their application under the stream for high-wage positions if the wage offered is at or above the provincial or territorial median hourly wage.

As a reminder, each TFW Program stream holds specific requirements and responsibilities for employers, such as recruitment efforts, working conditions, employment duration, provision of housing and transportation, and worker protections. These requirements are designed to recognize the labour market impacts of hiring temporary foreign workers in certain occupations and industries.

The updated median hourly wages by province and territory for 2024 are now available online and are effective as of April 2, 2024. On or after this date, employers must ensure that they submit their LMIA application under the appropriate stream, using the updated median hourly wage, and also ensure that they comply with the requirements specific to the applicable Program stream. It is important to note that the LMIA Online Portal will be updated automatically as of April 2, 2024.

If you have questions about the TFW Program, please visit Canada.ca or communicate with the Employer Contact Centre

New Plant Hardiness Zones

The CNLA New Plant Development Committee (NPDC) in partnership with Communities in Bloom (CiB) and the Never Alone Cancer Foundation (NACF) is proud to introduce for spring 2026 the Always Together Rose (ATR)

This rose is a sport of the Never Alone Rose. The mutation that resulted in this sport has proven to be stable for the last 7 years. A select group of growers across Canada have propagated the Always Together Rose for the last two years. This rose has been relatively easy to propagate from cuttings, grows vigorously and shows extremely well in pots. Over 5,200 Always Together roses have been propagated by growers and initiated at the tissue culture lab.

All CNLA grower members have the right to propagate and grow this rose once a propagation/ growing agreement is signed. Interested growers can contact Jamie Aalbers (jamie@canadanursery.com) at the CNLA office for a propagation/growing agreement. ATR liners and 2 gal stock plants are available for spring 2024. Please contact the following growers to place orders:

·      Bylands Nurseries Ltd, BC - Mike Byland 250-769-4466 or website@bylands.com

·      Jeffries Nurseries Ltd, MB - Shawna Roland 204-857-52888 or info@jeffriesnurseries.com

·      J.C.Bakker & Sons Ltd, ON - Justin DeHaan 905-935-4533 or justin@jcbakker.com

Tissue culture plantlets will be available in Spring 2025. Secure your order by contacting:

·      Phytoclone Inc, QC – Sylvie Deslauriers 819-535-6019 or info@phytoclone.ca

The marketing synergy of the three partners will be combined, building up to the Always Together Rose market introduction in Spring 2026. The ATR Marketing Committee coordinates the marketing efforts of the NACF, CIB, and CNLA (NPDC) and has summarized its initial marketing plans (in this linked document). Please remember that this is the first draft of the marketing plan and its possibilities.
