30 Years of Protecting Land and Water in Lake County

A Big THANK YOU to

Supporter

LEANN MCMANN

Leann transformed one of our benches at the Rodman Preserve from a furry lichen covered seat to a smooth inviting bench. Although we love natural habitats to grow at the preserve the bench had become unappealing to sit on.

Leann volunteered to pick up the bench with her husband, Glenn, and take it home for some serious restoring. She scraped off the lichen, sanded the whole bench, and applied multiple layers of sealer. Voila! A beautiful like new bench for all visitors to enjoy.

RODMAN PRESERVE is open every Saturday from 9:00-2:00. Leann's refinished bench is just a short walk from the parking area to the shady oak forest spot by the wetland's boardwalk. It's a perfect place to bird watch or rest, all while soaking up the great vibes of the preserve. Thanks again to Leann!

Land Tending

 at Rodman Preserve

Saturday, June 8

LCLT sponsors a day to bring interested folks to the Preserve to “tend” a few areas where we are nurturing the native grasses and remove invasive plants. It is fun gathering outside and making a difference at the Preserve. Are you interested in learning how to identify common native bunch grasses and helping them thrive at the Preserve? Do you like being outside, getting your hands into the Earth, meeting like minded people and sharing a meal? The work will only last for two hours at the most, or less if anyone gets tired. Participants will begin their day at 10 a.m. in our Nature Center at the Rodman Preserve. We will end the day enjoying a lunch provided by the LCLT on the back porch of the Nature Center.

We are also tending a patch of land that has been invaded by Scotch broom (Cytisus Scoparius). This is an invasive plant that can form dense stands that crowd out native plants and forage species, making it difficult for forests to regenerate.

Last year, volunteer, Chuck Williams started working on removing Scotch broom from the Rodman Preserve. Chuck has extracted much of the Scotch broom patch but more needs to be removed as well as scraping out new growth. If you would like to learn more about how to remove this plant while helping the preserve, please join us for "Land Tending Day." RSVP below.

Please RSVP so we can plan for enough food: Hope to see you. June 8th, 10:00am, Rodman Preserve
Yes, I'll be there!

Annual Supporter Coffee

The Lake County Land Trust held its annual “State of the Land Trust Coffee,” in April at the Rodman Preserve's Nature Center. The coffee is usually held in the Spring and is part of the trust’s “DONOR BENEFITS,” program for donors of $100 a year or more.

President Val Nixon gave an update on the Lake County Land Trust's projects and our new website was unveiled. Check it out at LAKECOUNTYLANDTRUST.ORG

This event is a chance to embrace the land we all work so hard to conserve and have some fellowship with likeminded nature lovers. We sipped freshly brewed coffee, ate delicious homemade and tasty bakery goodies all while mingling with other LCLT supporters.

Our new board member, Eric Woychik, made Fennel Oatmeal Cookies which were the crowd ’s favorite! Click for ERIC'S COOKIE RECIPE. It was a lovely morning spent in good fellowship.
