LAND REPORT 100
Earlier this month, I debuted the Land Report 100 at the Land Investment Expo. (Peoples Company sponsors both the LR100 and the Expo.)
Almost instantly, responses reverberated across America and around the world. Tianqiao Chen’s ownership of 198,000 acres of Oregon timberland put the Chinese national at No. 82 on our list and quickly became a breaking news story. Unfortunately, our research led to inaccurate reports that the transaction had not been properly vetted.
The following week, we set the record straight with additional reporting on Chen’s ownership that documented how his California company “proactively and voluntarily applied for review of the potential acquisition by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS).” Few of us will ever need to deal with CFIUS, but all of us should appreciate its mission. An interagency committee at the Treasury Department, CFIUS scrutinizes investments and real estate transactions involving foreign persons to address any national security concerns. The fact that Chen’s team readily cooperated with the Treasury Department speaks volumes about his intent.
And our follow-up reporting? It’s my hope that it gives you a better understanding of our commitment to bringing you all the facts.
