Lancaster Agriculture Summit 2013

Are you a farmer, a participant in Lancaster's agri-food system, or interested in local food and farms?

Take part in the 2013 Agriculture Summit: "Preserving the Farmer and the Farm" on Thursday, November 21, from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road in Lancaster.
There is no charge for the event but is required.

The goals of the Summit are to take stock of the economic, environmental, cultural, and social resources that the Lancaster County food hub offers to producers and residents and to discuss ways to sustain those resources by securing the economic viability of producers and the food resources of those in the food hub.

Three major presentations will be held in the morning: the role of agriculture in the local economy, a beginning profile of the supply and distribution chains of Lancaster County agriculture, and an initial assessment of the intangibles (water quality, livability, agri-tourism) associated with agriculture. These presentations and the following discussions will kick off a year-long study of the topics.

Lunch will be devoted to a celebration of the 100th anniversary of Cooperative Extension in Lancaster County and will be followed by a series of mini-workshops devoted to topics for producers and consumers alike before the Summit closes mid-afternoon.

This promises to be an extremely important opportunity for participating in the process of building a roadmap for Lancaster's agri-food system. Please plan to attend!

Don't forget our new Calendar for Local Foods Events.

Remember, we've switched to a new online calendar,
mounted on our Facebook page. It's easier to keep current, which means we can list more events, and update information as needed.

We have all the farmers markets days listed on it, farm events, workshops, dinners, and much more. So check it out. And if we've missed something, send it to us--we'll do our best to include it!

Buy Fresh Buy Local is a nationwide, grassroots program managed by the FoodRoutes Network. Pennsylvania chapters are coordinated by the Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture

(PASA).

Lancaster's Buy Fresh Buy Local chapter is spearheaded locally by

The Local Economy Center of Franklin & Marshall College and an all-volunteer Steering Committee.

The mission of

Lancaster Buy Fresh Buy Local is to increase the demand for locally-produced foods, and strengthen our local food system by connecting Lancaster County families, farmers markets, restaurants, and other institutions with Lancaster County farmers.

Our initiatives educate the public on the benefits of locally-grown foods, increase consumers access to local and sustainably produced foods, and help our  farmers find local markets for their products.
