Lakeview East's Own Sam Sanchez Welcomed as First Mexican-American Chairman of the Illinois Restaurant Association
|
Last week at its Annual Meeting, the Illinois Restaurant Association announced Sam Sanchez as the newly elected Chairman of the Board.
Stepping into the role held for the past two years by Gregory Schulson, CEO of Burrito Beach and Lunan Corporation, Sanchez most recently served as the IRA's First Vice Chairman and is the Founder and CEO of Third Coast Hospitality Group.
In the mid-eighties, Sam Sanchez moved from his family's hometown in Sabinas Hidalgo, Mexico to start what is now an accomplished hospitality career in Chicago. With an extensive background that spans concept development to daily operations, his extensive knowledge of all things restaurant-related drives the success in his businesses. He is the principal partner overseeing operations and business development for Moe's Cantina, Old Crow Smokehouse, and Tree House, with forthcoming concepts on the horizon.
In addition to his restaurants, Sanchez owns EMC Construction, a full-service construction company that handles renovations of existing properties and new construction. In June 2020, he founded SDS Blocker Manufacturing, a company producing high quality disposable face masks. Highly involved in civic, charitable, and mentorship activities, he is highly regarded as community leader and was named Restaurateur of the Year from the Illinois Restaurant Association in 2015.
"I am honored to have been elected Chairman of the IRA," said Sanchez. "I've been involved with the association in many ways over the years, but it is a proud moment to be the first Mexican-American operator to serve in this role. Gregory Schulson has been a force of leadership during his time as chairman, and he's set the stage for us to move forward. We have a big journey ahead of us, and I'm ready to get to it and work in lockstep with Sam Toia, his team, and the industry that is so critical to our local economy."
Please join us in congratulating him! |

Updates to COVID-Related Business Restrictions
|
Based on the progress the city has made in the established metrics, effective immediately, bars, restaurants and events can serve alcohol until 1:00 a.m., and indoor capacity can increase to the lesser of 50% or 50 people per space. All other regulations remain in place for these establishments, including:
- Food must be available at all times in order to offer indoor service.
- This means that bars, taverns or breweries without a food license can reopen indoors as long as they partner with a food establishment so that food is available to patrons at all times (e.g., making menus available and allowing delivery, allowing patrons to order from third-party delivery services).
- Maximum of six patrons at indoor or outdoor tables.
- Patrons can sit at bars, with six feet of social distancing between parties.
- Face coverings must be worn at all times, except when patrons are seated and actively eating or drinking.
- Patrons must be seated whenever they are eating or drinking.
- Tables must be six feet apart.
Indoor capacity at restaurants, bars, and events can increase to 50% or 50 people within one room or space (whichever is less) and establishments can remain open for on-site liquor service until 1:00 a.m.
Additionally, larger establishments that can fit more than 50 people within a room at 50% capacity can use impermeable barriers such as plexiglass in order to divide rooms into multiple spaces. Provided that these spaces are fully divided by impermeable barriers, and that tables are six feet apart with no more than six people per table, establishments may have the lesser of 50% capacity or 50 people within each space.
Click here to read the full announcement. The city's guidance on dividing rooms with impermeable barriers will be released later today.
Other industries, such as performance venues, health and fitness centers, movie theaters and personal services, can also increase to 50% capacity, with no more than 50 people within any one space and 20 people in indoor fitness classes.
Furthermore, alcohol sales from businesses with a Package Goods license can now continue until 11:00 p.m., a two-hour extension from the 9:00 p.m. curfew that has been in effect since April. In adhering to standard public health practice, additional easing of regulations will be considered if Chicago sustains existing risk levels for at least two weeks following this announcement. More information on Chicago's plan for cautious reopening will be available at chicago.gov/reopening.

Extension of License Expiration Dates: All licenses that expire between March 15, 2020 and June 15, 2021 will be considered active until July 15, 2021 and those businesses can operate during that time without renewing their license or paying a fee.
Extension of Sidewalk Café Permit Expiration Date and Extension of Reforms: All current Sidewalk Café Permits will be considered active through May 31, 2021 and businesses with a Sidewalk Café Permit can operate their current Sidewalk Cafes until that date without renewing.
