Miss America & State Superintendent of Public Instruction Visit Badger

February 17th was an exciting day at Badger High School! A group of Badger STEAM students had the privilege of having Miss America, Grace Stanke, speak with them.

A self-described “nuclear nerd,” Grace is the third Wisconsinite to be crowned Miss America in the organization’s 101-year history. She is from Wausau and attends the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she studies nuclear engineering. She grew up competing in scholarship-based pageants. Grace is an advocate for clean energy sources.

Badger was honored to have another special guest , Dr. Jill Underly, the State Superintendent of Public Instruction. Dr. Underly joined Badger students at the Miss America assembly. Following the assembly, she toured the high school and witnessed all of the wonderful things happening at Badger.

How do students work on writing in Kindergarten? Here are a few teacher-led examples of how we practice sentence structure, penmanship and spatial awareness, and usage of sight words and phonetic spelling (writing the sounds we hear):

  • Silly Sentences: Mrs. Isom writes a sentence on the board with many “errors” from spelling to mechanics. The students help make the corrections and then write the correct sentence on their board.
  • ”Sloppy copies” and “Final copies”: Practicing on a whiteboard and making corrections first helps students write a neat copy for final work. It’s all part of the writing process!
  • Students use sound boxes to sound out new words in Guided Reading and transfer those skills, along with sight words, to write comprehension simple sentences with guided instruction.

It’s so exciting watching letters and sounds transfer to words and sentences in Kindie!
