Proposed labor standard raises exempt salary level from $455 to $970
The Boyne Area Chamber and the Northern Michigan Chamber Alliance are urging Boyne Area employers to take action TODAY to voice concerns with the U.S. Dept. of Labor's dramatic proposal that could cost jobs and decrease room for advancement in workplaces across the country. The proposal, which alters the white collar exemptions under the Fair Labor Standards Act, includes an unprecedented increase of over 100 percent to the minimum salary threshold (from $455 per week to $970), resulting in greatly limited workplace flexibility and increased labor costs for businesses across the country.

"Boyne on the Water" plans to be unveiled Sept. 15 at high school
How can Boyne's waterfront be improved? Hundreds of groups and individuals from the community offered valuable input on that question. Your ideas have been brought together into a more finalized design concept which will be unveiled on Sept. 15th. To get the best possible final design, we need your feedback. A
draft plan will be unveiled at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15, at Boyne City High School. City officials and a steering committee for the project are encouraging area residents to attend and to help spread the word about this meeting. Dubbed "Boyne on the Water," the effort is part of a grant-funded program conducted by Michigan State University in collaboration with the Michigan Municipal League. The team is using the input and suggestions gathered through sessions held in May and July - plus follow-up comments via email - to create a more finalized design concept that will be shared with the public at this third meeting. For more information about the project, and some of the ideas presented in previous session,
visit the city's website
. Anyone who has questions about the project may call steering committee chairman Jim Baumann at the Boyne Area Chamber, 231-582-6222, or Barb Brooks at Boyne City Hall, 231-582-6597.

Sommerset sewer groundbreaking Tuesday; Lakeshore Drive to be reduced to one lane
A Groundbreaking Ceremony for beginning of the Sommerset Pointe to Boyne City Sanitary Sewer Force Main Project will be held Tuesday, Sept. 8. The ceremony will start at 10:30 a.m. with gathering and entertainment provided by the Pine River Jazz Band. At 11 a.m. remarks by various officials will take place to be followed by the groundbreaking ceremony. This project, some nine years in the making, will allow for increased economic expansion in the Boyne City area while helping to improve the quality of Lake Charlevoix by allowing those properties along the project route, both in Eveline Township and Boyne City, to connect to the city's first-class Sanitary Sewer System and abandon their septic systems at a time of their choosing or when necessary. The project consists of a new pumping station to be located at the southerly end of the Sommerset Pointe property, and approximately 3 miles of 6-inch diameter force main to the City's existing pumping station on Front Street at Peninsula Beach. The force main will be installed along the west/south side of Lakeshore Drive and Front Street. R. Roese Contracting Company of Kawkawlin is the prime contractor and they plan to place the majority of pipeline via horizontal directional drilling to minimize surface disturbance. The cost of construction and engineering for the project is approximately $2.3 million. Construction will begin along Lakeshore Drive beginning Tuesday. The roadway will be reduced to one lane, with traffic control provided by temporary traffic signals to maintain two-way traffic. The majority of the project should be completed by Nov. 15.

Michigan Community Dental's Tom Veryser passes CEO reins to
Gregory Heintschel
Boyne City-based Michigan Community Dental Clinics (MCDC) is pleased to announce that its board of directors has appointed Dr. Gregory Heintschel to succeed Dr. Tom Veryser as chief executive officer following a yearlong transition period. Drs. Heintschel and Veryser have worked together for the better part of the organization's history to grow the statewide nonprofit dental clinic network and continually enhance dental service quality for the state's most vulnerable citizens in the most cost-efficient manner. Veryser formed MCDC in 2006 initially in response to a call for assistance from the Health Department of Northwest Michigan to better serve low income, under-insured and Medicaid patients. Heintschel has played a significant role in MCDC's growth as a healthcare network. He has served as the organization's chief dental and operating officer since 2007, and is active in leadership roles of national dentistry organizations. Heintschel served 20 years in the U.S. Army Reserve prior to joining MCDC, and has been honored for his outstanding work in cosmetic dentistry and published on topics related to administrative procedures for dental office efficiency. Michigan voters strongly
support of post-Labor Day school start
Once again, Michigan voters have overwhelmingly spoken in favor of starting the school year after the Labor Day holiday, according to a statewide survey of 1,075 likely 2016 voters conducted by Mitchell Research & Communications August 8-10. The survey found that nearly three-fourths support the law requiring all public school districts to start after Labor Day. Support remains strong at 64% even when Labor Day falls late in the calendar year as is the case this year. The poll also found that August was the favorite month for Michigan family vacations, by a seven-point margin over July.
"Michigan voters continue to embrace starting school after Labor Day," said Steve Yencich, President and CEO of the MLTA. "Summer is by far our industry's biggest season and July and August are the most predictably warm months. Voter opinion and plain old common sense tell us starting school after Labor Day is as good for Michigan families as it is for our state's economic future." said Yencich.

Walkabout sculptures: "Surroundings can greatly enhance art experiences"
The following was written by California resident Diane "Annie" Mathias in her "Uncovering Wonder" blog after vacationing in Boyne City:
>
I was mesmerized as I watched the feathered blades of Peter Griz's "Sculpture in Motion" slowly spin in the breeze. Lake water washed over rocks of the nearby shore. Surroundings can greatly enhance our art experiences, I smiled.
The sound of water was constant and calming. I was surrounded by the art, the wind and the water at the Veterans Memorial Park, Boyne City, Michigan. I appreciated how the sculptures in this city were creatively displayed for public enjoyment. For me, I had entered into a time of deep peace. To have the viewer become lost in their art is every artist's dream. The Walkabout Sculpture Show succeeded in making this dream come true. Full story.
