"Did not God choose those who are poor
in the world to be rich in faith and heirs
to the kingdom?"
~ James 2:5
Sunday's Readings:

First Reading — Say to those whose hearts are frightened: Be strong, fear not! Here is your God (Isaiah 35:4-7a).

Psalm — Praise the Lord, my soul! (Psalm 146).

Second Reading — Show no partiality as you adhere to the faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ (James 2:1-5).

Gospel — Jesus makes the deaf hear and the mute speak (Mark 7:31-37).
Heart of the Matter
Sometimes hearing passages from Scripture is like listening to the evening news.

Reports of burning sands and thirsty ground. People fearful and sick. People beaten down and desperately hungry. Strangers at the mercy of others. All of these and more are cited in the readings today from the prophet Isaiah, in our responsorial Psalm 146, and in the blunt words of the Letter of James.

If anyone doubts how attentive our Scriptures are to the plight of poor and vulnerable, they should just listen to the words that Catholics worldwide will be hearing on this 23rd Sunday of Ordinary Time.

The point of the biblical message is not to submerge us in guilt but to open our eyes. Most of us, especially in our country blessed with so many resources, can avoid looking into the eyes of those who suffer.

Summer Supper Sept 2nd
According to Feeding America's Map the Meal Gap Study, one in seven people in Cook County will experience food insecurity this year. Though statistics like this are hard to hear, and the hunger seen by OLBS Good Samaritans even harder to see, we are proud to be part of a parish of service. Thank you for your continued support of Catholic Charities Dinners and Summer Suppers.

If you or someone you know is in need of a home-cooked meal, drive through our St. Julian parking lot for a Summer Supper. We will be serving a traditional Oktoberfest meal complete with smoked sausage, homemade German potato salad and apple pie tomorrow, September 2nd between 6:30 and 7:30pm.
Happy Labor Day!
In observance of Labor Day, parish offices will be closed on Monday, September 6th.

We wish all our OLBS parish family a happy, healthy and safe holiday!

The Journey Begins...
Season 1 of our new Grief-Share Group begins on Monday, September 13th at 7pm. Please contact the parish office if you would like to come and be comforted.

We will listen as you talk about your loved one, cry with you in your sorrow, laugh with you as you recall the good times or sit in silence when you don’t care to share or speak (sharing is always optional). We won’t tell you to hurry up, get a grip, pull yourself together or let go and get on with your life.

COVID Mitigation Protocols
With a return to required face coverings in all indoor public spaces for all people over the age of 2, regardless of vaccination status, in Chicago and all of Cook County, the archdiocese is temporarily reinstating several mitigative measures in affected parishes.

For all Masses and other liturgies celebrated in Cook County the following directives apply:

Masks must be worn by all participants for the duration of the Mass, with the following exceptions:
  • Presider: When praying or preaching, the mask may be removed.
  • Readers: When proclaiming the readings or announcing the petitions, the mask may be removed.
  • Cantors: When leading hymns or proclaiming the Psalm, the mask may be removed.
  • Wind instrumentalists: When playing, the mask may be removed.

When receiving Holy Communion:
  • As the communicant approaches the priest or extraordinary minister, he/she receives the Host in the hand.
  • The communicant steps six feet to the side, removes the strap from one ear of the mask or face covering, letting it hang from the other ear, uncovering the mouth, and consumes the Host.
  • The communicant replaces the mask over the mouth and nose and returns to his/her seat
