9:00 a.m. Academic Goals and Instructional Improvement Item 5.1 Consideration of revisions to Bulletin 741, Louisiana Handbook for School Administrators, related to the creation of a diploma option for students assessed on the Louisiana Alternate Assessment, Level 1, (LAA1). Requirements for Students on LAA-1 to earn a Career Diploma
The proposed rules on the BESE website are not the final version expected to be given to BESE. The Louisiana Department of Education indicated a revised version will be presented to BESE to include language recommended by the Louisiana Developmental Disabilities Council clarifying that these rules are how a student on LAA-1 can satisfy the pathway requirements for a Career Diploma.
Advocates of Act 833 are grateful that th
e Louisiana Department of Education listened to concerns about the original proposed language that implied a new seperate diploma would be created and agreed to submit a revised version at the BESE meeting. P
arents and educators have expressed
agreement with the proposal to align course requirements for students on LAA-1 to the course requirements of all students. This alignment will provide employers and others a more accurate understanding of which courses the student passed to graduate. The alignment of expectations for students on LAA-1 would ensure that all students continue to receive instruction to a balanced approach of academics and career course work.
EOC Scores in Final Course Grades The Louisiana Department of Education (LDOE) is proposing expanding an existing rule that counts the End-of-Course score as five percent of the final course grade for students on LAA-2 to include students on an alternate pathway for a diploma (Act 833). For most students the End-of-Course test score counts for between 15% - 30% of their final course grade (the percentage is determined by the school district). LaTEACH members were instrumental in getting the five percent rule passed for students on LAA-2 and it seems appropriate to expand this for students on an alternative pathway for a diploma.
