Sisters of the Holy Family to Celebrate 175 Years with Youth Mass
New Orleans Archbishop Gregory M. Aymond will serve as celebrant of the Mass
NEW ORLEANS - On Friday, October 6, 2017, the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Family will continue their 175th anniversary celebration with a Youth Mass, 10:00 AM at St. Mary's Academy. New Orleans Archbishop Gregory M. Aymond will serve as celebrant of the Mass with concelebrants Father Daniel Green and Father Howard Byrd and homilist Father Tony Ricard.
More than 500 students representing schools throughout the Archdiocese of New Orleans are expected to be in attendance as well as a host of priests, deacons, Sisters of the Holy Family and invited guests.
Twenty years before the Civil War of the United States, and before it was legal for such a congregation to exist, the Sisters of the Holy Family were founded in New Orleans by Venerable Henriette Delille, a free woman of color and co-founders Juliette Gaudin and Josephine Charles. The congregation dedicated their lives to teaching the slaves, caring for the elderly and the most abject of society.
Since their founding in 1842, the Sisters have been the faces of love, mercy and compassion to people all over the world including the United States, Belize, Central America, and Africa. Additionally, they have faithfully ministered in schools, parishes, nursing homes, prisons and housing for the elderly.
"The Sisters of the Holy Family have a rich legacy of caring and sharing with and for the people of God," said SMA president and alumna Sr. Clare of Assisi Pierre, SSF who served for 13 years in Belize. "This Mass, dedicated to our youth, is a great way to acknowledge and celebrate the commitment that the Sisters made 175 years ago."
Those sentiments were echoed by St. Mary's Academy principal Sr. Jennie Jones, SSF, a 1970 alumna of the Academy.
"As one of the oldest private Catholic schools in the nation, we are exceedingly grateful to the Sisters of the Holy Family and foundress Venerable Henriette Delille for their foresight, perseverance and continued guidance," said Sr. Jennie Jones, SSF. "This celebration is an opportunity for our youth in the city to come together and reflect on the blessings of our past, recognize the many opportunities of our present and work toward an even brighter future."

The Man Behind the Montel & Michelle Labels: An Oral History with Sam Montalbano
Featuring Moderator John Broven
Sam Montalbano, known in the music business as Sam Montel, has done it all. He ran Deep South Studio in Baton Rouge and worked with artists such as The Boogie Kings, Sugar Boy Crawford, and Slim Harpo. He owned the Montel and Michelle record labels, putting out regional and national hits such as Dale & Grace's No. 1 "I'm Leaving It Up To You." As a concert promoter, he brought national and international acts to Baton Rouge, including Jimi Hendrix, Otis Redding, Ray Charles, and The Who. Montalbano will discuss his record labels and the South Louisiana music industry with
John Broven, author of South to Louisiana: The Music of the Cajun Bayous and Rhythm and Blues in New Orleans.
10:55 - 11:50 am
Last Train from Kicksville: A Tribute to Billy Miller of Norton Records
This panel will honor the late Billy Miller, described by David Fricke as "a collector and scholar of the raw, fundamental and unapologetic in rockabilly, R&B and garage punk who shared his knowledge and passions with the exuberant, addicting force of a true fan." Miller, with Miriam Linna, founded Norton Records, which has been releasing important and often forgotten music for over 25 years, and was a heavy influence on the Ponderosa Stomp. Linna was the first drummer for the Cramps and later played with Miller in a band called the A-Bones. She is joined on the panel by James Marshall, a former New York Times critic and former owner of Lakeside Lounge in New York and Circle Bar in New Orleans; Todd Abramson, WFMU DJ and the former talent booker at Maxwell's, the famed Hoboken, New Jersey nightclub; and Deke Dickerson, a musician, writer, and music historian. Musician and musicologist
Michael Hurtt will moderate.
Evie Sands made some of the finest blue-eyed soul singles of the '60s. A cult figure of vintage pop, Sands was born in Brooklyn but came of age in Los Angeles, recording "Take Me For a Little While" and "Angel of the Morning" before they became hits. She retired from performing in 1979 to concentrate on writing and producing, but waged a triumphant comeback in the late '90s and has been at it ever since. Sands will be interviewed by the Grammy-nominated producer, writer and editor Sheryl Farber.
1:30 - 2:15 pm
Make it Sound Like a Train: An Oral History with
Charles Connor
Featuring Moderator David Kunian
As the drummer in Little Richard's band the Upsetters, Charles "Keep A Knockin'" Connor is credited with introducing the hugely influential "Choo Choo Train" style - successive eighth notes with a loud back beat - into the rock 'n' roll lexicon. He went on to drum behind legends such as Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson, and James Brown, who credited Connor with being "the first to put the funk in the rhythm." Fittingly, his drumsticks are on display at the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame Museum. Connor, a New Orleans native, was inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame in 2010. He will be interviewed by David Kunian, the Curator of Music at the New Orleans Jazz Museum.
2:25 - 3:10 pm
Forever Young: An Oral History with Reggie Young
Featuring Moderator red kelly
You may not know his name, but you know his music: Reggie Young has appeared on over 100 chart hits, in multiple genres, in a career spanning more than 60 years. A guitar great, he appeared on the Louisiana Hayride before moving to Memphis and recording with Hi Records' Willie Mitchell. In 1964, when the Beatles tapped Bill Black as an opener on their U.S. tour, Young, who was Black's guitarist, left the studio for the road. He went on to became a top session man in Memphis and then Nashville, playing on hits for Elvis Presley, Aretha Franklin, Neil Diamond, and Dusty Springfield, among many others. Music archaeologist and blogger
red kelly will talk to Young about his extraordinary and influential life in music.
3:20 - 4:05 pm
Walking the Dog: Growing Up with the "World's Oldest Teenager" Rufus Thomas
Featuring Carla and Vaneese Thomas and Moderator Andria Lisle
Carla and Vaneese Thomas, stars in their own right, will discuss growing up with their father, Memphis R&B and funk pioneer Rufus Thomas, "the World's Oldest Teenager." The elder Thomas had hits with "Walking the Dog" and "Bear Cat," both recorded with Sam Phillips, as well as hits on Stax Records such as "The Funky Chicken." Carla Thomas, whose first duet partner was her late father, has been hailed as the Queen of Memphis Soul since 1961, when her sweet, yearning ballad "Gee Whiz (Look At His Eyes)" became a pop and R&B smash. One of the first essential signings at Stax, she served up a string of hits throughout the '60s including "Let Me Be Good To You" and "B-A-B-Y." Vaneese Thomas cut two sizable R&B hits of her own in 1987, "Let's Talk It Over" and "(I Wanna Get) Close To You)." Her 2016 album "The Long Journey Home" was widely acclaimed. Writer, curator, and musicologist Andria Lisle moderates.
Gary Anderson, better known as Gary U.S. Bonds, will look back at his storied and pioneering career. In 1960 he recorded his first single "New Orleans," which became a national hit. He followed up with the even bigger hit "Quarter To Three," which inspired Dion and the Belmonts' "Runaround Sue." After years of touring with artists like B.B. King and recording additional albums, Gary left his record label but continued to perform. A chance meeting in New Jersey led him back into the studio in 1981 to record the successful "Dedication" album with Bruce Springsteen & Steven Van Zandt. The record included the hit "This Little Girl," a song Springsteen wrote for Bonds, which brought him back into the spotlight. Bonds will be interviewed by WFMU DJ
Todd Abramson, the former talent booker at Maxwell's, the famed Hoboken, New Jersey nightclub.
The Ponderosa Stomp 2017 Music History Conference would not be possible without support from:

Meet Alison.
When her father dies unexpectedly, graphic novelist Alison dives deep into her past to tell the story of the volatile, brilliant, one-of-a-kind man whose temperament and secrets defined her family and her life. In this Tony Award-winning musical, Alison moves between past and present, reliving her childhood spent playing at the family's funeral home, her coming of age journey, and her confrontations with the looming, unanswerable questions about her father's hidden desires.

Mrs. Heather's Pumpkin Patch
9 am - 5 pm weekdays 10 am - 5 pm weekends; Event continues until November 6th.
TH Farms
11215 Lee's Lane Hammond, LA 70401
Everyone
Cost:
Admission price is $7 per child (newborn and up); adults free. Types of payments accepted: Cash or Checks.
Mrs. Heather's Pumpkin patch offers endless amount of fun activities for your kids and family! Enjoy storytelling, face painting, a petting farm, jump on the Mega Jumping Pillow, and learn fun facts about the pumpkin. Feel free to bring a picnic lunch!
How:
It's best to call before you go if you plan on visiting during the week as lots of schools schedule field trips. Show up anytime on the weekends!
Prices vary for pumpkins; free to take your own pictures!
It's that time of year to pick out the perfect pumpkin or two! A cute area set up with hay bales, pumpkins and scarecrows offers you the perfect picture opportunity! Please note weekday and weekend hours differ! On the weekends, the patch opens at 10:00 am.
Bring the entire family and celebrate fall at the New Orleans City Park Pumpkin Patch! Hunt for the perfect pumpkin, relax on a hayride, enjoy delicious food, play carnival games and even cruise around Big Lake on a pedal boat!
Place cooked squash, ricotta, Parmesan, olive oil, seasonings, and S&P in a food processor. Pulse until mostly smooth. Mixture should be very thick and sticky, like cookie dough.
Bring a large pot of water to boil.
Lay out half of the wonton wrappers. Place 1-2 tablespoons filling in the center of each wrapper. Brush edges with egg wash. Place another wrapper on top, sealing tightly at the edges, and rounding the top with your palm to make a nice shape.
Boil ravioli in batches for about 5-8 minutes. Drain gently (they break easily) and toss with olive oil to prevent sticking. Serve with that yummy kale pesto and extra Parmesan cheese!
Notes
The garlic and herbs (I've used both fresh rosemary and thyme, separately) can be sautéed in the oil if you want to increase the flavor of the herbs and remove the bite of the garlic. I just add a TINY touch of nutmeg to warm it up, but I don't love nutmeg so it's seriously the tiniest little dusting ever - too small to measure. If you love nutmeg, go for it - but start with less and taste and adjust as needed. Too much nutmeg and suddenly you're not having fun anymore. I know from experience.
I'm Just Me Because Month in October invites all people to express their individuality ...Our motto is "Be Yourself!"
The entire month of October focuses on promoting individual development, creating environments that break down stereotypes, and embracing who we really are. By doing so, we also recognize the diversity around us, and we move beyond simple tolerance to celebrate humanity. Our movement starts by giving voice to the things that make us unique and outstanding and recognizing that acceptance helps change the culture.
The I'm Just Me Movement reminds us the concept of diversity encompasses acceptance and respect. It means understanding that each individual is unique, and recognizing our individual differences. These can be along the dimensions of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, physical abilities, religious beliefs, political beliefs, or other ideologies. Understanding diversity is the exploration of these differences in a safe, positive, and nurturing environment. It is about understanding each other and embracing and celebrating the rich variety contained within us.
We can express ourselves through our strengths, talents and achievements. Some may choose to define themselves by their challenges or appearance; others emphasize their inner beauty or unique features. I'm Just Me Because Month provides endless conversations starters from hair color to where a person was born, but we don't have to be defined only by our circumstances, mistakes or by address. Remember, to identify the connection of the world's greatest you, and be THAT! As Tina says, "Live life forward."
HOW TO OBSERVE Express the ways that make you the unique individual you are throughout the month of October. Celebrate the person that is like no other and be you! Use the #ImJustMeBecause and tell us why by posting on social media.

Dear Residents and Business Owners,
We will be filming scenes in your neighborhood. This letter is to inform you that on Saturday, October 7, we will be filming scenes at the 700 Block of Harrison Ave from approximately 7am to 4pm.
We thank you for the opportunity to film in your neighborhood. We realize that you may have had a great deal of filming in the past and that it can sometimes be a nuisance. We would like to make this a positive experience for you. On the day of filming our crew parking and base camp will be situated in private lots to minimize our impact in the area, however it will be necessary to hold some street parking for our working trucks and filming requests during this time.
"No Parking" signs will be posted as follows:
SAT 10/6 From 7am to 4pm:
700 block of Harrison Ave parking mall btw Memphis St & Vicksberg St
700 block of Harrison Ave (river side) btw Memphis St & Vicksberg St
6200 block of Memphis St (uptown side) btw Harrison Ave & French St
6200 block of Vicksburg St (uptown side) btw Harrison Ave & French St
On Saturday, October 7th, we will have law enforcement officers perform ITCfrom approximately 9am - 4pm at the intersection of Harrison Ave & Vicksburg St.
We will also partially obstruct the sidewalk of the downtown, riverside corner of the 700 block of Harrison Ave @ Memphis St. Pedestrian right of way will be maintained at all times.
All driveways and handicap zones will be respected. We work closely with Film New Orleans, who may be contacted to verify our credentials at 504-658-0923, to help ensure that we adhere to the standards they have set forth. We will have police on hand as well as security throughout this process. If you have any specific parking concerns, contact us as soon as possible with any special needs so that we might come up with some creative solutions to address said concerns. If you have any loud construction work or large deliveries scheduled for the day in question, please let us know in advance so we can accommodate your needs.
We endeavor to make this as pleasant an experience as possible as the key to continuing Louisiana's role as a premier filming destination is community involvement and support. The film industry creates a wealth of local jobs and opportunities in communities across Louisiana. We are excited to play a part in this growth and productivity. We are looking forward to our upcoming work in the neighborhood. We thank you so much for your hospitality & patience. Do not hesitate to contact us at any time with whatever questions.

8 Memorial For Filmmaker Royce Osborn Set For This Weekend
On September 14, the visionary behind the 2003 documentary All on a Mardi Gras Day, passed away. Royce Osborn was a 7th Ward native who would go on to be recognized by the New Orleans Film Festival and receive a Louisiana Filmmaker Award for that film, which focused on the "story of New Orleans' black Mardi Gras."
As Geraldine Wyckoff wrote in Osborn's obituary for OffBeat, his legacy will be forever cemented through that film, but his memory lives on in other ways. "Beyond his filmmaking that included his work on If Those Bricks Could Talk, which focused on the human side of the destruction of the Lafitte Projects, Osborn was perhaps best known for his love of reggae music and the Jamaican culture," she wrote.
Royce's love of the music and culture of the African diaspora - and, of course, his masterpiece of a film - will be on display at his official memorial service taking place on Sunday, October 8 at the George & Joyce Wein Jazz & Heritage Center (1225 N. Rampart St.). The schedule is as follows:
1:20p.m. - doors open 2:00p.m - screenings of All on a Mardi Gras Day film extras plus interviews with Royce 2:10p.m - screening of All on a Mardi Gras Day 3:10p.m - tributes by loved ones 3:30p.m - musical tributes from Henry Butler, Gregory Thompson and John Boutte 4:00p.m - arrival of Brass band, skeletons, baby dolls and African dancers 4:10p.m - Second line to Congo Square and meeting with percussionist Luther Gray 5:30p.m - after party celebration at Golden Feather (704 N. Rampart St.)

Following the celebrity panel judging, attendees will be able to taste the concepts prepared by the competition teams, as well as additional dishes created by Café Reconcile's Executive Chef Eugene Temple alongside a selection of outstanding participants and graduates from the program. This event will also feature unique auction items donated by guest chefs.

City Calls for Volunteers to Participate in Homeland Security Active Shooter Drill at Audubon Zoo
NEW ORLEANS-The New Orleans Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (NOHSEP) is seeking 200 volunteers to participate in a drill to test emergency response plans in the event of an active shooter attack. The exercise will be held at Audubon Zoo (6500 Magazine St.) on Monday, Oct. 9, 2017 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Volunteers will be assigned various roles to play in the tactical exercise, which will simulate an active attack. Examples of roles include those who are wounded, deceased or separated from family members. While some volunteers will role-play as children, all volunteers must be over the age of 18. Those interested are advised that the drill will include simulated gunfire. The exercise could be particularly interesting to young adults considering careers in public safety or emergency management. Lunch and free parking are included.
Role-playing with real people allows emergency personnel to fully test plans, policies, and response. During the drill, City will test a joint Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and Special Weapons And Tactics (SWAT) plan to more quickly treat victims as areas are cleared in an active attack. The City will also test a family reunification plan to track and communicate with family members the status and location of people affected by an active attack.
There are different types of exercises that can help organizations evaluate emergency plans, including walkthroughs, tabletop exercises, functional exercises, and full-scale exercises. A full-scale exercise is as close to the real thing as possible. It is a drill that takes place on-site using the equipment and personnel that would be called upon in a real event.

Fall 2017 Jazz @ Sandbar Commences This Wednesday
Jazz @ the Sandbar was established in 1990 by Ellis Marsalis, the first Coca-Cola Endowed Chair of the Jazz Studies Program at UNO. The series is designed to provide UNO Jazz Studies students an opportunity to get real life experience performing with respected professional musicians in front of a live audience. Concerts are presented on Wednesday nights during the fall and spring semesters and feature a different respected jazz artist each week. Jazz @ the Sandbar provides a medium for our students to exercise their improvisational skills and gives them the rare opportunity to work with jazz masters.
The Wednesday concerts continue with these special guest artists:
October 11: Vocalist Germaine Bazzle
October 18: Percussionist John Wooten
October 25: Trumpeter Andrew Baham
November 1: Guitarist Mike Moreno
November 8: Bassist Rufus Reid
November 15: Clarinetist James Evans
Germaine Bazzle, 10/11, 7pm
On Wednesday, October 11, UNO Jazz Studies welcomes vocalist Germaine Bazzle. Bazzle will perform with UNO ensembles directed by Victor Atkins and Ed Petersen. Also performing that night will be master pianist Larry Sieberth.
One of the true legends of New Orleans jazz, Germaine Bazzle's voice in jazz is as distinctive as any. Influenced by the greats like Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, and Billy Eckstein, she took on a repertoire of classic jazz, American popular songs, show tunes, and the music of Duke Ellington. Sounds of the church were never far behind, and she sang regularly on Sundays with the Saint Louis Catholic Choir. A graduate of Xavier University, Bazzle chose to spend most of her time in her native New Orleans and recently retired from Xavier Preparatory High School after decades of teaching there. She can be heard on the compilation New New Orleans Music: Vocal Jazz, her own live offering Standing Ovation, and on Dianne Reeves' Blue Note release entitled The Grand Enclounter.
Jazz @ the Sandbar is presented by the UNO Jazz Studies Program with support from the UNO Student Government Association, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation, Inc., the New Orleans Jazz Celebration, Snug Harbor Jazz Bistro, WWNO FM, OffBeat Magazine, the New Orleans Theatre Association (NOTA), and Nathan and Pricilla Gordon. For more information, call the UNO Music Department at (504) 280-6039 or New Orleans Jazz Celebration (504) 309-JAZZ, or visit us on the web at www.nojc.org/jazz-at-the-sandbar.
