The Lake Wales Library Association Celebrates 70th Anniversary - Chartered February 1954
In 1953 a meeting spearheaded by the Lake Wales Chamber of Commerce's Library Committee was held. Those present were members of civic organizations, educators, business leaders and community members, all agreed that Lake Wales needed a publicly funded library.
This was the earliest meeting of what was chartered as the Lake Wales Library Association
in February 1954.
Organizations represented in the earliest days of the Lake Wales Library Association included the Lake Wales Woman's Club, Lake Wales Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis Club, Women of the Moose, American Legion Auxiliary, Rotary Club, Optimist Club, VFW Auxiliary, American Association of University Women, Lake Wales Garden Club, PTAs of Polk Avenue Elementary, Central Elementary and Hillcrest Elementary.
Join us to celebrate these dedicated citizens and organizations who led the campaign to provide public library services and build the new Lake Wales Public Library in 1960.
The Lake Wales Library Association will again join with the Lake Wales Area Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday, February 13, 5:30 until 7:00 p.m. for a celebration during Business After Hours at the Lake Wales Public Library.
February 12 – 16 is Love Your Library Week. This annual membership drive is held in the library’s main lobby. Join or renew your membership to LWLA and you’ll be entered into a drawing for one of five wonderful gift baskets.
