Thank you for your concerns about my carjacking. Crimes and the residual effects time to clear up. Although I felt better when I was still in shock, I am doing okay.
Contrary to expectations, July did not kick off my easy summer. It was business as usual plus drama, with just a bit of downtime.
My brother in Victoria died suddenly so I went there to help my sister-in-law for a few days. Like Brian and the old me, my brother had "stuff." I expect to go to Victoria a few times while we settle his affairs and deal with this massive collections (military books, anyone?). Rita and I started on the red wine cellar and wondered what he was saving it for.
July 04 marked two years since Brian died and as I continue dealing with his "stuff" the same question comes to mind. What are we saving it for? The memories I'll keep forever, but the stuff is never as valuable or important as we think it is. Let it go NOW!
I did some work in Surrey BC as well as exam marking for corporate governance candidates from Canada, the Caribbean, India, and Singapore. There are so many smart people out there who care about governance!
I got to ride the High Level Streetcar for the first time in a few years, and it is such a great way to experience my city. On my travels I got to try Spam Sushi, Borscht Devilled Eggs, and Bhaji Pakora.
My football team continues to test both my patience and my efforts to not use profanity in front of children. Honestly, I don't know how much longer the team's "reboot" will take but it's on my last nerve.
Thank you for your feedback on boards behaving badly. July gave me a break from some, and opportunities to hear about others I haven't yet worked with. Our poor board people just seem to be losing it these days!
Last month I requested a kinder, gentler July. It finally arrived right at the end when I got to see Barbie (the movie). I donned my Barbie skirt, pink Bekkie Fluevogs, my Barbie shoe bracelet, and my Barbie purse. A few hours of alternate reality did me a world of good. Fingers crossed the gentleness of it carries us into August. All my best to you!

Ignorance is curable, but I missed two opportunities at a football game to, if not cure then at least administer first aid, to ignorance.
Scenario 1 (Board-related): A fan was complaining about how horrible our team is playing this season. He said, "This is what happens when one guy on the Board of Directors decides he likes the coach. Now we're stuck with him."
Dear readers, you and I both know that's not how Boards work. We have this coach because the Board decided it, and not because of just one guy. Even if several board members didn't want the coach, the majority clearly DO. I have no doubt the Board has had many discussions on this topic, but when the vote is taken the ONE VOICE principle kicks in. You speak as a supporter of the Board's decision no matter how you voted in the meeting.
I didn't school that fan on the misunderstanding. See, I was also grumpy and while my brain was functioning fine, I wouldn't have been speaking from a good place in my heart. So I let him stay happy in his ignorance. For now.
Scenario 2 (Board-adjacent): Some fans say our team is losing because the name was changed from Eskimos to Elks.
Now this is one I have tackled several times in person and on-line, but I didn't jump in this time.
Having a name that was originally meant to convey strength and resiliency, but that was ultimately a racial slur of Inuit people based on the Anglicizing of a French slur (Esquimaux to Eskimos), well, it needed to go for so many reasons. The organization was in the midst of a long consultation process in the north, but in the context of Truth and Reconciliation and threats from sponsors, the timing escalated. The Board pulled the trigger and did the right thing by first dropping the name, then creating a generic name (Edmonton Football Club), then doing an involved naming survey, then announcing a new name. (This article gives some of the background).
During the time of the naming survey, Brian and I agreed that, as fans, we would support whatever name was chosen. Brian dropped his very well known and beloved Eskinator persona and adopted a new one (Elkinator) -- seamlessly and without whining.
Again, I let an opportunity go by with this fan and ignorance won the day. I suppose that is why you're getting the story (again) now. We don't always get it right, or at the right time, but we can always take a step. We can read and ask questions and listen to different points of view. The curse of living in interesting times can't be all bad.

Remembering My Brother
Martin Joe Wood
Oct 16 1936 - July 03 2023
| Joe was my (much) older brother. By example, he taught me to be interested in other people and places and showed me what a curmudgeon is. As a pilot who lived and worked around the world, he made me curious through postcards and gifts to me as a child. As an adult, he taught me to like red wine, and then what an embargo was when we couldn't get it from South Africa anymore. He was the source of all Wood family history. Joe fell at home and broke his neck. I miss him and am sad about all the questions I hadn't asked yet. RIP, Joe. | |

Some Quotes I Like
“DEFENSE PESSIMISM: According to psychologist Julie Norem, positive thinking doesn't work for some people, who should try defensive pessimism.
Here's how it works: in the face of an anxiety-producing task instead of psyching yourself up, psyche yourself down by consciously lowering your expectations. Rehearse everything that could go wrong, and devise strategies to avert every conceivable glitch. This will produce a sense of control and reduce anxiety,
helping you to perform effectively. Or, maybe not.”
― Jon Winokur, Encyclopedia Neurotica (also author of The Portable Curmudgeon)
“I'm not like the other girls. I know what I want for dinner. I've been thinking
about it since lunch."
-- Unknown (but it should have been ME)
“Do not grow old, no matter how long you live. Never cease to stand like
curious children before the great mystery into which we were born.”
– Albert Einstein
“Just because you lost me as a friend doesn't mean you gained me as an enemy.
I am bigger than that. I still wanna see you eat, just not at my table."
-- Tupac
