Gary Fish is a Maine State Horticulturist, bringing decades of expertise to the role. With a B.S. in Forest and Wildlife Management from the University of Maine and a recent Master of Policy, Planning, and Management, Gary's educational background is robust. He's served as State Horticulturist since 2015, following a distinguished 28-year tenure as Manager of Pesticide Programs for the Board of Pesticides Control. Additionally, Gary has been involved in forestry services, chaired the Arborist Board, and worked in horticulture for ChemLawn Services Corporation. A native of Farmington, Maine, Gary's lifelong passion for entomology and plants was sparked by his mother's influence, who cultivated stunning roses and rock gardens. Beyond his professional endeavors, Gary finds joy in capturing the natural world through landscape photography.

Important notice from the Maine Health and Environmental Testing Laboratory (HETL)

Any Chlorophyll samples will now be reported in ug/L (ppb).


For past seasons, HETL has reported Chlorophyll-α (CHLA) in mg/L (ppm), but moving forward HETL will be reporting CHLA in ug/L (ppb) units. Please feel free to reach out to Mackenzie Lee or Joe Niskach with any questions/concerns that may arise from this change.

Lake Stewards of Maine (LSM) and Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) will hold a webinar on Survey123 and its applications for aquatic invasive species (AIS) monitoring on Thursday, May 16 at 2:00 pm.

Updated Quick Keys Now Available for Purchase


The new "Quick Key to Ruling Out Maine's Most Unwanted Aquatic Invasive Plants", updated to include Maine's four newest aquatic invasive plants, are now available for purchase. These waterproof pocket guides (only 3.5" by 4.25" when folded) have an updated layout and information for ruling out all 15 plants on Maine's aquatic invasive species list.

For those who missed this week's IPP 101 webinar, or want a review, a recording is now available on LSM's website.


Completion of an accompanying Review Quiz is required for those seeking Tier 2 IPP Certification.
