Water Quality Reminder

Reminder that we need all data that has been gathered by October 1 at the latest. If you have not already sent us a batch of data this summer, please do so.

METAPHYTON

Did you know that LSM has a dedicated form for documenting metaphyton in our lakes! Your tracking of these filamentous (stringy) algae is important in helping us to better understand waterbody preservation and climate change.

Learn more and access the form here: Lake Stewards of Maine - Metaphyton Program

Help us protect our lakes and track impacts of climate change!

We love beautiful hot days ☀️ on our lakes, but hot summer weather and runoff can cause algae blooms. If you spot algae like in the picture (left), please let us know or use the EPA BloomWatch app. Pro Tip: Keep a clear jar on your boat for samples and take photos. 📸 Your help keeps our lakes healthy! 🌊

LSM's IPP Travel Team Visits

Northern Maine

Earlier this month, LSM staff and volunteers visited northern Aroostook County for our 2024 Northern Maine Initiative.

During the week-long trip, LSM's Invasive Plant Patrol (IPP) Travel Team surveyed three northern Aroostook County lakes for aquatic invasive species. After conducting full Level 3 surveys on Cross Lake, Madawaska Lake, and Daigle Pond, no evidence of aquatic invasives were found.

Along the way, our team met with local officials, recruited IPP volunteers during a Plant Paddle training, and participated in a community barbecue and information session hosted by Friends of Cross Lake, in collaboration with our partners at Maine Department of Environmental Protection and Maine Lakes.

As the threat of aquatic invasives continues to grow, the IPP Travel Team is becoming one of LSM's most important initiatives. Travel Team members are imperative in our efforts to engage new lake communities to educate about and prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species. While many Travel Team members can be considered experts in aquatic plants, many are beginners, and some lend other talents like mapping and community networking. There are many ways to assist LSM on our IPP Travel Team, and we are always looking for new members.

To learn more about the IPP Travel Team and join in the fun, please watch our introductory webinar or email stewards@lakestewardsme.org.
