News & Updates
This year, the LRC is sponsoring a new reading program called the Abraham Lincoln Readers' Choice Awards. It's like the the Nickelodeon Teen Choice Awards minus the slime and Nick Cannon.

Students who read 4 of the selected titles will receive a certificate of commendation from the Illinois School Library Media Association (looks great on college applications!) and will be eligible to vote for the book they think deserves to win the Abraham Lincoln Readers' Choice Award for the 2016-17 school year.

You may borrow any of the selected titles from the LRC. They can be found on the bookshelf adjacent to the Circulation Desk.

**Abraham Lincoln Readers' Choice Award**

She stole a life. Now she must pay with her heart.

When nineteen-year-old huntress Feyre kills a wolf in the woods, a beast-like creature arrives to demand retribution. Dragged to a treacherous magical land she knows about only from legends, Feyre discovers that her captor is not an animal, but Tamlin-one of the lethal, immortal faeries who once ruled their world.

As she dwells on his estate, her feelings for Tamlin transform from icy hostility into a fiery passion that burns through every lie and warning she's been told about the beautiful, dangerous world of the Fae. But an ancient, wicked shadow over the faerie lands is growing, and Feyre must find a way to stop it . . . or doom Tamlin-and his world-forever. --

100 Sideways Miles (2014) by Andrew Smith

Call Number: FIC Smith
Availability: click here

**Abraham Lincoln Readers' Choice Award**

Finn Easton sees the world through miles instead of minutes. It's how he makes sense of the world, and how he tries to convince himself that he's a real boy and not just a character in his father's bestselling cult-classic book. Finn has two things going for him: his best friend, the possibly-insane-but-definitely-excellent Cade Hernandez, and Julia Bishop, the first girl he's ever loved.

Then Julia moves away, and Finn is heartbroken. Feeling restless and trapped in the book, Finn embarks on a road trip with Cade to visit their college of choice in Oklahoma. When an unexpected accident happens and the boys become unlikely heroes, they take an eye-opening detour away from everything they thought they had planned-and learn how to write their own destiny.

I Am Malala: How One Girl Stood Up for Education and Changed the World (2014) by Malala Yousafzai

Call Number:  AUTO-BIO Yousafzai
Availability: click  here

**Abraham Lincoln Readers' Choice Award**

"I am Malala. This is my story."

Malala Yousafzai was only ten years old when the Taliban took control of her region. They said music was a crime. They said women weren't allowed to go to the market. They said girls couldn't go to school.

Raised in a once-peaceful area of Pakistan transformed by terrorism, Malala was taught to stand up for what she believes. So she fought for her right to be educated. And on October 9, 2012, she nearly lost her life for teh cause: She was shot point-blank while riding the bus on her way home from school.
No one expected her to survive.

Now she is an international symbol of peaceful protest and the youngest- ever Nobel Peace Prize nominee. In this Young Readers Edition of her bestselling memoir, which includes excessive photos and material, we hear firsthand the remarkable story of a girl who knew from a young age that she wanted to change the world-and did.

Malala's powerful story will open your eyes to another world and will make you believe in hope, truth, miracles, and the possibility that one person- one young person- can inspire change in her community and beyond.--

Waze (app)

Waze is a viable and successful alternative option to Google Maps on your smart device. If you use Google Maps routing function, you know, when the British woman read directions to you as you're driving and sometimes, calmly, tells you to move into the far left lane at the very last minute; then you may want to consider trying out Waze

Waze has been reviewed by many as having greater traffic accuracy than Google or Apple Maps. The app's traffic data is crowdsourced, so even obstructions in the road, like a muffler or a fallen branch, will be reported by fellow drivers and the app will notify you of the upcoming hazard. Waze might even notify you of an upcoming Police speed trap. Download the app, and try it out.
