Reminder: School Schedule Modified on April 10

SAT and PSAT testing to impact daily schedule.

The school-day SAT with essay is scheduled for the entire junior Class of 2025 on Wednesday, April 10. This early release day is a non-attendance day for seniors, except those who did not complete the SAT in April 2023.

Additionally, the PSAT 9 will be administered to freshmen and the PSAT 10 to sophomores at East Campus. This exam, required by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE), provides an important assessment of student learning and paves the way for student success on the SAT taken during junior year. Following the completion of testing, the school day will conclude and the District will run regular bus routes at that time.

As students prepare for the exams that will be administered at both campuses on Wednesday, April 10, please refer to the communication linked below for information about transportation, testing requirements, and more.

Laura (Almdale) Koerner – Class of 1993

After earning her B.S. in Systems Engineering at the U.S. Naval Academy, Ms. Koerner served as a research assistant at this same institution and at the Naval Dosimetry Center before earning her M.S. in Nuclear Engineering, with distinction, from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Commissioned as a Surface Warfare Officer (Nuclear), Ms. Koerner served on the USS Enterprise as the Nuclear Propulsion Plant Watch Officer and as the Tomahawk Strike Officer, Gunnery/Ordnance Officer, and Public Affairs Officer on the USS Mahan. After completing her naval service, Ms. Koerner assumed various positions in the private sector, including Program Manager/Senior Systems Engineer for PVM, Inc., as well as Program Director/Project Management and Program/Project Manager Lead for the financial services company USAA. An active community volunteer, Ms. Koerner currently serves as councilwoman and mayor pro-tem for the City of Fair Oaks Ranch, Texas, chairwoman/ commissioner for the Texas Veterans Commission, and a Blue and Gold Officer for the U.S. Naval Academy Admissions Department as well as being a board member for many military-related groups and government/political organizations. Among her many accomplishments and awards, Ms. Koener received the Navy Achievement Medal (1999), the USNA Class of 1972 Junior Officer Leadership Award (2000), the Navy Commendation Medal (2000 & 2003), and served as a certified USA Triathlon Level 1 coach at the Olympic Training Center.

John “Jack” Hollowed – Class of 1975

After graduating from the University of Illinois with a B.A. in Biology, Mr. Hollowed earned a M.S. in Oceanography from Old Dominion University, where he was also a research assistant and Vice-President of the Graduate School Organization, and a J.D. from Seattle University. Driven by his passion for the natural world, Mr. Hollowed subsequently dedicated his career to environmental advocacy and protecting the land, water, and treaty rights of the Northwest Native American indigenous communities. Over the course of 35 years, he held various positions in the Northwest Indian Fisheries Commission, including policy analyst, Director of Habitat Services, and legal advisor. One of the highpoints of Mr. Hollowed’s advocacy efforts came in serving as the main architect and strategist for the landmark United States v. Washington case, in which the U.S. Supreme Court affirmed the Ninth Circuit Court’s ruling that preserved Native American tribal habitat protection, restoration, and treaty-protected fishing rights. Additionally, his support for indigenous communities in the 1980s Timber Fish and Wildlife Agreement, the early 2000 Forest and Fish Agreement, and the Water Resources Forum led to significant improvements in environmental protection on private forest lands and the protection of federally reserved water rights. Although Mr. Hollowed sadly passed away in February 2023, his wife Anne Hollowed, also an Environmental Attorney will speak on his behalf.

April 8 Solar Eclipse Information

Lancers prepare to safely view this natural phenomenon.

With much media attention and anticipation, the viewing of the solar eclipse has nearly arrived and Lancers will be able to participate! On Monday, April 8, North America will experience a total solar eclipse that will span from Mazatlan, Mexico to Newfoundland, Canada. The path of the moon’s shadow will fly over southern Illinois and central Indiana, which means it will be close enough to the Chicago area to see a 95% solar eclipse.

Beginning around 12:51 p.m. the moon will begin to eclipse the sun. By 2:07 p.m. the eclipse will reach its peak of 95% coverage. At 3:22 p.m. the entire event will conclude. This will be the last time a total solar eclipse will occur in the U.S. until August 23, 2044, and not until August 4, 2111 will Chicago experience a total solar eclipse.

Given the scarcity of this type of event and the excitement it brings, the Science Department has created a solar eclipse lesson to teach on Monday in all science classes. Upon exiting the building to view this natural phenomenon, all students and staff will receive a pair of ISO solar eclipse glasses. West Campus will dismiss students at 1:55 p.m. and conclude the school day in the stadium. The schedule for East Campus will be modified: seventh period will conclude early, allowing students to report to eighth period and leave their belongings in the classroom before going outside to watch the eclipse from the bus parking lot and grassy areas away from Medinah Road. Following the eclipse's peak, East Campus students will return to their eighth period classroom to conclude the school day.

In addition to the ISO solar eclipse glasses, students will receive information about safety and eye protection. Any student not interested in exiting the building during the eclipse can notify their teacher and remain inside the cafeteria.
