Reformation - The 501thAnniversary
A year ago, the Luther Rose and images of Martin Luther could be seen every across the Twin Cities. Musical ensembles and churches were all celebrating the 500
th
anniversary of the Reformation. Ecumenical commemorations and lectures were being held on college campuses and in church basements. This year, however, is a bit more subdued. While a 500
th
anniversary was worth celebrating, as we approach the 501
st
anniversary, the question is asked, so now what?
There are of course surprises in Lutheran identity. Although the Lutheran Church began in Germany, there are now Lutherans in 148 countries around the world. Only half of the world's 80 million Lutherans still live in Europe. Today, there are significant churches in Indonesia, Ethiopia, Tanzania Brazil, and North America. Surprisingly, the only country with a Lutheran majority population outside of Europe is Namibia.
In spite of the global nature of Lutheranism, theologians and churches still find a home based on the historical understanding of Protestant Reformations guiding principles of the five solae, Sola scriptura, by Words alone, Sola fide, by faith alone, Sola gratia, by grace alone, Solus Christus, through grace alone, and Soli Deo Gloria, to God's Glory alone. Yes, Lutherans still believe that they are justified by God's grace alone, and there is nothing they can do to merit God's grace.
How the church will find a voice to speak this message for another 500 years is the question for a new generation of theologians. Until then, we will continue to teach our confirmands the familiar words and cadences of Luther's Small Catechism. This is most certainly true. This we will experience again on Reformation Sunday, October 28th at Lake of the Isles.
Peace, Pastor Arden Haug

Cut a Rug Gala Success!
On behalf of the LOTI Church Council, I would like to thank you for all your gifts that supported the Cut a Rug Gala on Sunday evening, September 30th. It was a great success. We raised over $10,000 which will cover the cost of new carpeting for the sanctuary, as well as its installation. In addition, the extra funds generated will be used for the updates to the HVAC system which could not completed earlier this year due to the cost overruns on the bathroom project.
Special thanks to Michelle McCreery for her wonderful meal, and to Susanne Haas for organizing the silent auction. Finally, what a delight it was to listen to the dance music of John Madson and the
Starry Night Quartet.
Thank you again, Marty Carlson
LOTI Church Council President

Working Speaker Series Working is the theme of an ongoing speaker series in which people talk about what they do all day and how they feel about what they do. Many people within our congregation are engaged in fascinating work, and this series gives us an opportunity to learn more about what they do.
The next session will be Sunday, October 14th, 11:00am and the guest speaker will be Melinda Hoke, Vice President of Philanthropy for Twin Cities Public Television. Although not a member of LOTI, Melinda and her husband often sing with the LOTI choir and perform duets during the summer.
Melinda has over 30 year of experience in philanthropy, working with such groups as the University of Minnesota, Minnesota Public Radio, and most recently for Twin Cities PBS. She is a presenter at local and national conferences and webinars and is a consultant locally and in the PBS system
Melinda's talk on the world of philanthropy will take place after a brief coffee break following the Sunday morning service. Those who are interested will be invited to take their coffee/tea into the Christy Room for about 45 minutes. The first 15-20 minutes will be an informal talk by Melinda, leaving the time remaining for questions from those in attendance.
If you are interested in sharing your Working story, please contact jannahaug@yahoo.com

Confirmation Sunday
In many Lutheran churches the Confirmation worship service is known as the Affirmation of Baptism. The name recalls the promises that were made by the parents and godparents at the time of a child's baptism. They vowed that the Christian faith would be child's one day, and that they would speak on behalf of the child until that day comes. The Rite of Affirmation is that coming of age for the young adult. It is also a day for a renewal of the faith through the laying on of hands and the giving of the Holy Spirit.
On Reformation Sunday, October 28
th
we will celebrate confirmation with Sam and Victoria Riesberg, Joseph Mechels, Wesley Bartels, Jacob Hovda and Henrik Olson.

Abide With Me
by Elizabeth Strout, author of Olive Kitterage.
After the tragic death of his young wife, Reverend
Caskey, a New England minister, struggles to hold
together his own life, his family, and his town,
while dealing with his personal anger, grief,
and loss of faith. In prose incandescent and artful,
Elizabeth Strout draws readers into the details of ordinary
life in a way that makes it extraordinary. All is considered-life, love, God, and community-within these pages, and all is made new by this writer's boundless compassion and graceful prose.
